I bought a car a few years ago with a mate that had been used by an entire family of smokers.

£300 Sierra estate POS (no abuse please...)

We used some stuff called Meguiars interior spray (spelling??) and after 3 or 4 repeats, involving this stuff and a Vax wet shampoo (maybe not such a great idea for van carpets unless can be dried totally), the smell and coloring were totally eradicated from anything that couldnt go in the washing machine.

But yeah, van should go back to dealer; even if not for a refund, they should at least offer a professional valet...

Probably not in advert so no chance there. Not sure of private or dealer buy.   If you eat fish & chips in the caravan the smell seems to stay in there forever and may be a better smell.

If you aren't going to use it for a few weeks, chop some large onions into quarters and leave on some plates around the van and they will absorb all of the smell - it will take some time though.

A lemon cut into quarters will get rid of any kitchen smell. It might work for smoke too. Its cheap and easy enough to be worth a try.

I *bet* you're an ex-smoker (cough) - no-one *ever* (wheeze) makes as much fuss (choke, gurgle, splutter) about smoking as (cough) a former addict (phlegm & spit)

Smoking (choke, cough, splutter) is actually good for (gurgle, gasp,
wheeze) you!....

No never smoked never will, sorry but I prefer my lungs as they are not polluted with enough industrial pollutants to fill an Olympic sized swimming pool.

I'm not having a dig or anything but why is this? Is there a clinical reason that diabetics can't be exposed to the smell of cigarettes? I'm asking because my BIL is in the process of being (probably) diagnosed as diabetic and my OH is still smoking the odd ciggie and his clothes can smell of it, I don't want to make BIL poorly because of this.

Cigarettes produce many chemicals that are bad for diabetics. For it to smell means you are inhaling some of these chemicals. You just don't want it if you are a type 1 or 2 diabetic. Ask any diabetic specialist. Having been diabetic for 25 years you do not want anything that will aggravate your situation. Its an illness that you must make live with you rather than living with it. It still kills many people.

as a post script there are reckoned to be 1 million people in the uk with type 2 and not know about it! If you are overweight, smoke and get up to pee a lot at night, and feel drowsy most of the time one of them could be you. A test is simple at your doctors
PS:still trying to remove the smell in my van!!!!!!
