I will be approaching Lincoln from the south on the A15. I need to get to the A57 on the north of the city.

Is it best to tow through the centre or turn off the A15 just south of Lincoln onto the A1434, travel south-west to pick up the A46 and reach the A57 that way ?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

We live in North Lincolnshire and I appreciate your problem. We just haven't enough bridges in the county! Driving solo we would do as you suggest - but you can cut a corner. About half a mile along the B1434 you can fork right along the B1190, Doddington Road and this will take you across to the A46. They're not bad roads, depending on the time of day. The junction of 1434 and 1190 is in Swallow Beck - have a look at google map. I'll be interested to see what others think!

I have lived in or around Lincoln for my entire life (55 years) so I feel qualified to speak on this one.

I would go through the centre as I used to do frequently when I was towing my caravan. This way, there is only 1 hill to negotiate and the roads are reasonably wide.

At Bracebridge Heath, turn Right at the lights to avoid Cross O'Cilff Hill, follow the road round to join Canwick Hill (not as steep as Cross O'Cliff Hill). Go down Canwick Hill, straight across the lights along Canwick Road, Over Pelham Bridge and turn Left immediately after Pelham Bridge and then turn Right into St Marys Street. Go over the lights onto Wigford Way, turn left at the end onto Newland, turn left at the end onto The Avenue? and then turn Right onto Carholme Road which is the A57, then straight over the bypass A46 roundabout.

Hi
I live 6 mile out side of Lincoln. The A1434 is Lincoln its the main road to Newark (and has major road works going on at the moment) its no better than going through and will take you longer to go round than through.

Do as RK1234 suggests, there is no good way of getting round or through Lincoln.

Go round. there are a number of places that if you take wrong turn you can end up in places were you couldn't turn a 3 wheel car.
always avoid city centres if possible.

If you are coming from reasonably south of Lincoln (meaning further south than about 8 miles), I would take the A17 from Sleaford to Newark.
Then the A1 to pick up the A57 near Worksop or take the A46 and pick up the A57 just off the Lincoln bypass depending on how far along the A57 your destination is.
Lincoln centre with a caravan is best avoided unless you know Lincoln very well, as Corni says sign posts are not the best & the route out to the A57 is not that obvious.

Even though I live in Kent, I have family near Lincoln & I would avoid the centre when towing & I know the roads well.
