Recently sold the motorhome and bought a new caravan and car. On insuring the car with the co-operative insurance on line at a very reasonable quote, I was asked to send evidence of my 7 years no claims discount. This I duly did and was shocked and dismayed to be told that this could not be transferred from a motorhome to a car. I explained that it had worked the other way when I transferred from a car to the motorhome but to no avail. For the life of me I cant understand the logic. Anyone else come across this?

Whilst disussing motorhome insurance, let me tell you our sorry tale.

When we bought our campervan 3 years ago, the company we were insured with wouldn't insure it, so we found a company who would. Ok so far. This year the insurance was due to renew whilst we were away in Sept. OH applied to the company for a renewal quote, explained about the holiday. No problem they said, we'll put the quote in the post. No quote arrived, OH ringing regularly and being assured it was on it's way. Eventually just before we left he was told they didn't insure campervans in our area.
So he had a frantic ring round, and eventually found our original company would now insure us, and the nice lady on the phone said that as we had been insured with them previously, the no claims bonus would apply. OH paid up, it was due to start 4 days before we came back from France.
Whilst on holiday, he had an email from them saying the no claims didn't apply, he would need to pay an extra £150.
Anyway, they agreed to cover us until we got home. Then OH spent a lot of time trying to get them to apply for 'evidence of no claims' from the other company, spoke to the supervisor to get them to listen to the recorded conversation where the lady said it was ok.

Got sorted in the end. However the moral of the story is, make sure you have some sort of certification of no claims every time you change insurance companies. Apparently this should be available on line, but you should still get your own paper copy. This may sometimes be the renewal document, in our case, we never got one because we were going away

If an insurance company insures vehicles, motorhomes and caravans there shouldn't be any reason as to why they should not acknowledge your no claims discount I wouldn't have thought. However, one insurance company in particuar that insures all three is Saga but you have to be over 50 to qualify for any insurance so if you are over the qualifying age then it may be advisable to give them a call and put the question to them.

Because the Co-op insurance have already stated that it's not in their policy not to be able to transfer the no claims from a motorhome so it's pointless asking the same question again. By finding out from an alternative insurance company will give the OP an opportunity to find out some facts and maybe get a cheaper quote.

They will lie and cheat and change the rules as they go along and disclose subclauses after you have signed up ....... anything they can think of to get your cash.

My hubby spent 10 years as a taxi driver and when he retired last year couldn't use the no claims from the taxi insurance on our car. Consequently I am the main insured driver and he is named driver. I've tried different companies and they all say the same. I cannot understand why a taxi is not classed as a car for insurance purposes.

It's because the taxi was classed as a business which requires a different type of insurance cover so the no claims discount wouldn't apply to a cover for social and domestic pleasure even though it may be considered unfair. The OP having insured a motorhome would come under social and domestic pleasure which in this case the no claims should be honoured and granted as the towcar should be insured under the same category.

I done this recently. Sold the motor home 2years ago July. Just before my 6 years no claims bonus expires ( 2 years shelf life ) bought a car from the local ads for £160. Insured it with Churchill fully comp not to loose my second policy 6 years no claims discount in my name.
