My motor mover had stopped working; after a bit of head-scratching I decided to have a go at replacing the battery before sending it in to the workshop. Battery now replaced (those things are heavy!) and mover now working.

Not the greatest achievement in the caravanning world, given that people on here have been known to practically rebuild from scratch, but my first bit of DIY on the van as the ex-husband used to do all that sort of stuff.

Can now get the van off the drive, so am planning a bit of winter caravanning on my own, confident that I can cope with whatever little technical glitches I meet.

could it be that the original battery was just flat?, and the new battery cured the fault cos it was charged.
if so could the vans charger be faulty assuming you have it plugged in on the drive?

Yes Stu. Old battery had become completely flat - I didn't realise it needed topping up with water

so it was just a case of replacing the battery. But I'm just a little bit proud of myself for (a) figuring it out and (b) replacing the battery - only a tiny little job, but I've always been a bit nervous of messing with anything electrical. And those batteries are bloody heavy to lift in and out of the compartment - I'll need to start weight training if I ever forget to give this battery a little drink from time to time.

If its a sealed battery you won't need to top it up. Most are nowadays.

Now or should I say some time when it's light give the terminals a wipe over with vasalene it will help stop corrosion Well done girl!

Well done from me too!

I don't have a charger on my old caravan, so I take the battery out and put it in a plastic storage bench in the garden overwinter, and every month or so I charge it with a smart charger. I have to have help to get it out of the front locker on the caravan, too heavy for me to lift with spine probs.

Take a charger with you if you are going away, and charge the battery before you get home again, as you will use a lot of battery power with these short days. Then you will be able to use the mover to get back on the drive again.
