Leave the Awning down, the guy that uses Sandy Gulls will know what he's talking about.
------------- Just saying
If all is not lost where is it then?

We are off to Sandford near Poole. Not planning to use the awning, but just wondering what are risks of caravan, once pitched, being blown over?

Doesn't sound too good, this is from the Met. Office;
"A very intense low pressure system is forecast to run northeastwards across the country early on Monday, bringing the potential for an exceptionally windy spell of weather for southern parts of the UK. At the same time, persistent, heavy rain could cause some surface water flooding.
At this early stage there is uncertainty about the timing, intensity and track of the low. However, the public should be prepared for the risk of falling trees as well as damage to buildings and other structures, bringing disruption to transport and power supplies."
XC Weather is forecasting 53 knot max. gusts (just under 61 mph) for 04.00 Monday between Portsmouth and Poole.
Glad I managed to get our yacht pulled out of the water today!

heard gusts of "around 80mph" mentioned for the south coast sunday night into monday morning.
if that was to be true i wouldnt even be out with the caravan let alone worrying about whether to risk the awning or not.

I am also wondering if I should head off at all. Due to arrive in the New Forest on Sunday. Now thinking I may delay departure until Monday afternoon when the wind has passed over. Really don't fancy another night in the 'van with gale force winds - have done that once before. Porch awning literally turned inside out wedging the front door shut, but wasn't damaged thank goodness. Caravan rocked like crazy with each blast of wind though - which was a bit unsettling to say the least!

Daft question, but what's the definition of high winds? I've just checked the forecast and the BBC shows winds of 16-18 (mph, I assume). I've no concept of how windy that actually is - is that too high for an awning or is it fine ...?
The gusts cause the trouble. 18mph feels quite fresh, but if the gusts are a lot higher you could have problems. Our awning has had quite enough at 25mph.
This site is pretty accurate and might give you a better idea of what to expect;
