We have only ever camped in fair weather before but have a seasonal pitch now. We are on it currently in Thetford forest East Anglia

As everyone knows tonight there is due to be severe storms and very windy weather. Damaging gusts is what the forecast says. But I don't know if that means we would be foolish to stay. How fast does wind have to be to be a risk to a caravan. We are not exposed here but do have hedges and trees around.

We live an hour away so it is realistic to go home. Am I worrying unnecessarily or silly to stay. Anyone stayed in high winds, how high.

Our awning is not up.

We're in ours and not going home. We've put the awning down, I can't see the wind being strong enough to move the van, it weighs the same as a car when full :-)

Do you have a tree within falling distance of your caravan on the south west side of it? If not you will be as safe there as anywhere else.

try to find the direction of the forcast wind and point the front of the caravan into it, probably a bit over the top because of the time and unpredictable direction of the wind, fill your fresh and waste water carriers ant put them inside your caravan plus any other heavy gear like the awning and poles.
if you have an awning tie down put this over the caravan.
any garden furniture will fly around and cause damage so secure them also.
been there done that, got the t shirt.
If you think you are at risk, go home. insurance will sort out the van.

iF a double decker bus can be thrown in a field and trees uprooted i would say a touring caravan would have no chance with winds that strong .

I just want to say I'm sorry to hear about the young girl killed in a static caravan in Kent last night. Our thoughts are with her family tonight.

We travelled along the M4 solo this morning driving through high winds and beating rain, I was doing 60 mph when suddenly from behind a truck a car towing a caravan came flying past, I was able to accelerate to 65 but the car and caravan left me standing, the caravan was swerving about all over the place and we thought the driver was going to lose it anytime, thankfully when turned off the motorway. this is what gets us caravaners bad names
