Hi there,

I've been reading lots of posts on this forum for a while now but never actually posted anything.

I am looking to buying my first caravan within the next 6 months. I understand that this time of year is a good time to look as most folk want rid.

We're looking for a 2 berth lightweight caravan for myself, partner and dog called Ted. We are avid campers, been camping for the past 10 years.

I own a 2010 Citroen C3 1.6 diesel hatchback, with a 1158kg kerbweight, I am somewhat limited on what I can tow. I know some might say I should trade it in for something bigger if I'd like to tow but I don't feel this is an option right now.

My partner and I are 29 and 27 respectively, so both have licences after 1997, therefore have a limit... Unless we obviously did the extra test. But due to the weight restriction on my car, this wouldn't be necessary right now anyway.

I've used the website..
Whattowcar.com
But am quite limited as that only seems to have newish caravans on there.

I originally was looking at Eriba Pucks, this how how it all started. But since then, I've discovered that I think I might quite like a proper bathroom and shower - ideally an end arrangement.

I've also looked at (online not in real life) the new Venus 380/2, which I like the style (and meets the bathroom criteria) but I think a new caravan will stretch us financially. We would need to get it on credit.

I also like the Adria action, and would like to see this in real life, but so far have not seen any come up within a 50 mile or so radius. And similarly the T at B, but these are a bit on the pricey side I think.

I would travel nationally for the right caravan, but not for research.

I'm not discounting older caravans, as I know most of them are lighter, but I'm the one whose more keen on thae caravan idea than my boyfriend, who thinks caravanninng is for the oldies, so to get him on board it needs to be something that looks a bit different or cool.

Does anyone have any suggestions which I've not looked at?

Thank you and sorry for the ramble :)

The kip caravans are nice, but expensive! Your car will tow the smaller versions.

Freedom caravans are also lightweight, as are the older Sprite caravans. A lot of the pop top vans are lightweight as well, the Trigano for example.

A bathroom will always add extra weight and length onto a caravan. I have an awning with mine, and the loo goes in there. Most of the time I use a sites facilities.

As you are young and strong, you might want to consider some of the folding campers, some of which are really cool!

One thing I would caution against is going into debt for something which your partner will not take to.

Thank you for your quick reply! :)

The Kip caravans are pretty cool... Just looking on a Dutch website at them... There seems to be an abundance over there. Where did you get yours from?

If you want a cheap caravan you will find lightweight 2berths like ABI Marauders late 80s up to mid 90s from just a few £100s onwards on ebay. Obviously check for damp but plenty of good ones around. Most of these are under 900kg fully loaded.

We use the toilet in our caravan (wees only!), but would generally use the site showers, unless they were particularly minging.

We travelled down to Venture for our adria and it was well worth it, I can definitely recommend them.

Thank you for the advice :) it's much appreciated.

My parents own a Carthago motorhome and they tour around Europe in that so I think I'm looking for something where I could meet up with them every now and then and then go off on our own too....and often that might be in places that don't have much in the way of facilities... Hence the washroom.

For the price (no more than than 4k ideally but less is better hehe) we're hoping for something dry, fairy quirky and possibly something we can 'modernise' with new upholstry etc.

Also... Sorry!

I know I need to purchase a damp meter, the ones I've found only all have prongs to stick into the surface... Is that what folk use? Do sellers not get annoyed at making holes in the walls/floor etc? Or do they not leave marks?

Sorry I know it sounds a bit thick...

Freedom caravans are very light and the Jetstream 1st Class and Twin Sport have a toilet compartment including shower. They are built of fibreglass with a 25year life so good value 2nd hand if you can find one. Loaded weight 750kg. I have had one and can vouch for the build quality.

Alternatively if your partner doesnt want to make the jump to an oldie wagon try a folding camper such as the Dandy

http://www.rivadandysales.co.uk/category/camper

Being lower they are a lot easier to tow and although you sleep off the ground warm and snug they still retain a camping ferel and are a little quirky. They last for centuries so are really good value 2nd hand.

look also for GOING caravans as they are some of the lightest on the market but still give you the extra room if required.

the only silly question is the one you do not ask.
