I have fought 3 fires that involved building containing gas cylinders. Fortunately only one where the cylinders exploded.
However, that one was enough to make me very wary of these potential bombs. On that occasion both went off almost simultaneously, went through both the wooden floor and the roof of a works canteen and landed about 70 yards away.
The building had been evacuated and so no one was hurt, but we all got a hell of a shock seeing these things travel so far. The thoughts afterwards of what could have happened had these things gone sideways instead of upwards is just horrific.
On the other two occasions, the cylinders were kept well sprayed with water until they could be rolled into the loch where they were left for 48 hours underwater until it was deemed safe to fish them out.
Familiarity breeds contempt especially where electricity and gas are concerned, but when these things go wrong, the outcome can be lethal.
