My husband has asked for a bike rack for the car for Christmas. He doesnt want one that goes on the roof but one that attaches to the back of the car. Ideally it would hold 3 or 4 bikes?
Can anyone point me in the right direction of one that we can use whilst towing the caravan and is easy to set up (husband isn't very practical!) Ive had a quick look but it's all a bit confusing. Price is less of an issue than ease of use.
Have a look at a Maxxraxx. You can tow and carry bikes, the only problem you'll come across with any towball mounted one is exceeding the noseweight, you need to check carefully that you won't.

Thanks. Am I not always going to have a problem with the nose weight though? I think the noseweight of our Kia Sorrento is 100kg. The bike racks need about 85 of this but I'm assuming the caravan uses most of it already? I must sound stupid but when it comes to weights I leave it all to my husband to figure out!
I doubt you would have enough clearance between car/caravan to carry 3-4 bikes, ie bike would hit front of caravan as you turned. Also you need to add weight of caravan hitch on towbar ie around 70kg or more(whatever it is)to weight of bikes & rack, ie 30kg odd so you would need a car with at least 100kg noseweight.
If your car does allow around 100kg nosweight then you could probably carry 2 bikes on towbar rack with caravan provided you had enough clearance to turn.
go to halfords and they will advise you on the correct type and size for your car.we used one on our 4x4 when towing.never a problem.take into account each bike can weigh up to 20 kgs, plus rack weight.think fitting three may be pushing your luck on the max axle weight of the car.i fitted two to the rear of the car and one inside the caravan.done 1000s of miles with ours on.yes with bikes fitted turning can be a problem but only when reversing onto a pitch
We spent ages looking for one that fitted on the back of the car for four bikes while still allowing towing, but with two already on the front of the caravan and all the weight at the back, and the back window glass going all the way to the edge of the tailgate, we eventually gave up and bought a roof mounted one. We do need to carry a three step stepladder with us though to get the bikes up there in the first place, which causes a little amusement when we get to the end of our travels. It does however give a better weight distribution to the car, and doesn't effect mpg. Hope that you find something that suits you.
its not just the tow bar nose-weight you have to consider which of course will be close to max probably with the caravan alone.
if vosa stop you and weigh you then they may test individual axle weights....so if you have too much weight on the car rear axle then you are asking for a ticket. The axle weights are usually printed on a sticker on door frame somewhere.

We have a high level rear mounted one, doesn't interfere with the caravan and we carry 2 adult and 1 child bike on it...got it off amazon.
And do you manage to keep to your noseweight limit ?
or for that matter your rear axle could be overloaded !!

I think I'll pay a visit to Halfords
oktell us how you get on.

Hi Nicki, Good choice. I've used the Maxxraxx on a Sorento XT with no problems at all. It's so good I now have it fitted to my Hilux Twincab. Merry Christmas.
