We are going to view a van at the weekend - we have viewed one "damp free" van with water puddling on the floor and a leaking skylight which we walked away from.

We have a small budget and so are looking at an older van.  This one is a 1992 Elddis Wisp 5 berth with awning.  I have got a damp meter (never even got it out last time lol!), spare reg plate, towing mirrors, haynes caravan manual and another book.  We have bought a Kia Sedona with tow bar and 2 electric connectors.  Hubby has a class 2 HGV license and done heavy/awkward loads but neither of us have ever towed.  I know to look for damp everywhere we can.

I have so many questions it is unbelievable but these are the main ones as I'm concerned about buying a money pit:

1  Should we take a gas cylinder to test the water heater?

2  The van comes with an EHC and a 12V battery and is stored on the sellers drive, should all the internal electrics work off the battery or should we ask to see it connected up?  Can this even be done to a house?

3  I know to check the tyres for age/ wear/ cracking etc and the towing lights (the seller states they powered the towing lights from the battery not the car - I believe as we have both sockets we should be able to power them from the car).  Do I need to check anything else for towing (brake pads? Hitch?)

4  We only have a standard tow-ball so am I correct in thinking we cannot tow an alko hitch?  He has said it comes with a stabiliser bar, can we use this with a standard tow ball?

5  Should I be checking for anything else?  I don't know if this age of van is CRIS registered or has a log book?

If we buy it, I am going to drain down the water system/ loo straight away just in case.  Hopefully I will use the next two months to reseal the joints just in case and make it our own.

Thank you for any advice I get

the only advise I would give is don't rush into buying, this time of year there are always plenty of vans to choose from as sellers don't want to pay storage also ask for service history this will show it was looked after regardless of it's age, don't be fooled by claims of it not being used much so no need to service it's things like gas appliances brakes tyres etc that are deadly if left unchecked I'm sure you will get loads of help on this site so good luck.

1 Hopefully it will have a cylinder with at least some gas in it, but if not ask what type of regulator is fitted so you know which type of cylinder to take (if you already have a cylinder it's not a great deal of trouble to change the regulator). Check the hose for degradation/ageing.

2 Some of the equipment will probably need mains electric - with one of these you can connect the hook-up lead to a domestic supply.

3 If you have twin sockets fitted to the towcar and only one on the caravan you may need an adapter to use the road lights.

4 If it's an alko stabiliser you need a compatible (longer necked than normal) towball.

5 Probably!   I'd guess it's unlikely to be CRIS registered.

Thank you both.... will try and pick up one of those adapters before the weekend and I didn't know there was more than one type of gas regulator... so much to learn! We have 2 gas bottles one red and one blue that fit both our camping gas stove and our home gas barbeque... I'll have to look what we have fitted lol!

1 Should we take a gas cylinder to test the water heater?
Contact the seller and ask if there is a cylinder with it but the water heater will probably work off of mains electric

2 The van comes with an EHC and a 12V battery and is stored on the sellers drive, should all the internal electrics work off the battery or should we ask to see it connected up? Can this even be done to a house?

It can be done with an EHCadaptor with a 13amp standard household plug on one end. They can easily made up from a short length of lead. Some lights will be 12v some will be mains.

3 I know to check the tyres for age/ wear/ cracking etc and the towing lights (the seller states they powered the towing lights from the battery not the car - I believe as we have both sockets we should be able to power them from the car). Do I need to check anything else for towing (brake pads? Hitch?) towing lights should be run from the recharging car system. If they use the leisure battery I think they may have made an unwise modification. Lights go out is the battery s flat?

4 We only have a standard tow-ball so am I correct in thinking we cannot tow an alko hitch? He has said it comes with a stabiliser bar, can we use this with a standard tow ball? No. If the stabiliser is an Alko you mush use and Alko ball (unless you have a swan neck towbar. The Alko and standard will fit together but there is a danger of it coming off when driving.

5 Should I be checking for anything else? I don't know if this age of van is CRIS registered or has a log book?

If we buy it, I am going to drain down the water system/ loo straight away just in case. Hopefully I will use the next two months to reseal the joints just in case and make it our own.

When you drain down open the taps o release retained water in the taps. If it is dry leave the joints alone but it is insufficient to look for damp especially on a van of this age. Invest in a damp meter.

Thank you for any advice I get

1 Ask if it has a gas bottle, if not what sort of regulator. If the bottles you have are the very small one the butane regulator might well be different from what is in the van. If it is propane, take your regulator and a clip and you will be able to try it. Whatever if you buy it, replace the rubber gas hose.

2 on a van of tbat age the only things that are likely to work from the mains are the charging unit and possible a couple of mains lights. So what you really need will work from the battery. If it is parked by the house they will probably be able to plug in for you, but ask before you go, otherwise as others have said you need an adapter.

3 the towing lights MUST be powered from the car, otherwise the brake lights and indicators would not work. Plug in from the car and with the engine running try all the functions, and check that the caravan battery is getting charge ( not essential but worthwhile ), and that the fridge works on 12v with the engine running.

4 if it has an alko stabiliser this is an after market fit for that van, when he says it has a stabiliser bar this suggests that it has something after the fashion of a bulldog stabiliser, do not forget to ask for the car fitting for this.

5 at that age not cris registered and no log book.

If it is dry and tidy they are a nice van

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

I very much doubt a van of that age has Al-Ko stabiliser hitch & seller states 'stabiliser bar' which suggests old type blade stabilizer. you need plate behind towball flange to use this, but you won't need it & caravan will hitch up to your car ok.

If you want to check EHU works from house mains you need an adaptor which seller may or may not have. This buy from any caravan shop.

A caravan of that age will have the two 7pin 12n/12s plugs to match your car, it is unlikely it will have been changed to modern 13pin plug.

Bear in mind this is a 21yr old caravan, plenty of bits might not work & stuff might have been bodged, just go for cheapest possible price, otherwise you will burn gallons of diesel & still not find a perfect caravan of this age.

Main thing to check is road lights work so you can tow it & tyres are good, take a wheel brace to check nuts & pump/pressure gauge for tyres, otherwise stop at first garage to check pressures

My brother bought an Elddis Wisp which had a fair bit of damp, but one of the big issues was the front panel above the windows - and after buying it, we discovered other Wisp owners had had similar issues with cracking. My brother has repaired his but I would say it's definitely something to look out for and on the external of the van.My brothers blog can be found here - it will show you on the pics where the cracks were and what to look out for. Another thing to check are the grab handles at the back - brothers was missing one and it was sodden but it was behind the shower/wash panel wall - so damp meter wouldn't be any good.
Good luck

I would contact a local caravan engineer and get a pre purchase inspection done. Go and look first then if you want it tell the owners you want it checked by an engineer first before you part with any cash. That in itself could force them into telling you of any problems they may find.
If your still happy to go ahead then get the engineer to have a look. It will cost you about £45-£50 but it could save you a lot in the long term.
I personally on a pre purchase check over electrics gas check road safety common damp areas quick appliance function check.

As this is your first van I suggest you go to a reputable dealer who are bound by certain laws [sale of goods act] which will give you some protection. If you buy of any Tom Dick or Harry how do you know the vans not stolen and if they give you a receipt saying bought as seen youve got no comeback. Go in Jan/Feb before the season starts for most vanners, buisness will be very slack and dealers buy old vans in part ex but most wont buy a leaker they have the best in test gear. They do checks and put right or scrap depending on costs. But this time of the year they want to clear out older stock to make room for 2014. models being delivered, they my have had 1 or 2, 2014 models in since October to get orders for 2014 season but when the orders start to arrive Jan/feb they have got to make room I have saved upto £2000 on Sept/Oct  year before second hand price depending on age of van.
