We paid £89 last September with the Caravan Club (using their site on the IOW) with Red Funnel. Lots of campsites seem to do deals with pitch and ferry combined although often they are only for 5 days.

Have you tried red funnel? They were cheaper for our crossing. Ours was £141 including the campsite with red funnel, the same crossing was £171 and that didn't include the campsite with wightlink.
Yes Red Funnel is £160..my point was Whitelink and prices... even islanders are moaning...im afraid I think if they dont do somethink they will have no customers !!

Trouble is they have a captive audience. Red Funnel is a longer journey time wise so that's why the others can charge what they do. It would be cheaper to go to France!!! Pity they don't build a bridge, even with a toll it would be a lot cheaper.

Sorry, because you hadn't mentioned the redfunnel price, I assumed you were not aware of them and were looking for advice on discount codes etc. some people use tesco vouchers with wightlink, but still works out more expensive.
I don't think the crossing duration has much baring on price, is your coming from the midlands you would arrive from the A34 so are coming into Southampton, and the time saved on the crossing from Portsmouth is lost in the extra time taken to drive around Portsmouth to the ferry port.
Also, if you've had a long journey, it's nice to take the longer crossing, so you have more of a rest.
It is clearly outrageous at £424 and I can't believe there would be any takers.
Personally I wouldn't book a ferry at any of the prices in this thread as IOW holds no great delights for me. We did camp there back in about 1970. That was enough for me. I'd stick to mainland.
Last year we went with red funnel to whitefield forest,
5 nights and ferry included, wonderful site and trouble free crossing.I would recommend anyone to look at the red funnel website.
We also have stopped visiting the IOW and we live virtually across the water in the Solent area. Not only are the fares to get over pure extortion 'The Island' itself doesn't hold the attraction it used to have and I grew up over there and loved it dearly. The roads are in an appalling state although I gather there is a programme in hand to sort them out - could take some time! Also it's all looking a bit seedy in places despite a naturally beautiful aspect. The cost of eating out are pretty steep as are entrance fees to often somewhat disappointing 'attractions'. Think the IOW Tourist Board have some work to do otherwise they are going they will lose their holiday trade and lets face it it's about all it has at present.
We have friends living on the island who are livid about the ever increasing ferry prices.

We live in the Solent area too and would agree with everything you said. Only saving grace is the scenic views and one or two of the caravan sites if you can actually afford to get there in the first place.
I had complained to wightlink about their prices recently, and checking back tonight for my holiday, they have reduced their prices from £176 to £126 for 5 nights, but still cheaper to use redfunnel!
Were you booking direct with the operator or through a agent?
I also noticed that the longer you stay, the more expensive it is? How does that work? It's not costing the ferry company any more if your there for a week or 2 weeks.
I am supposed to be going for 2 weeks..site owner going to try and sort out with red funnel..whitelink are a joke..last year they wanted to charge us £35 extra to cross on an earlier ferry..we arrived an hour earlier got on a 7pm ferry instead of 9pm and didnt cost any more !!! Rob dogs...residents are not happy either.. and the ferry was hslf empty !
