hi people
I would like some advice regarding reversing the caravan onto a pitch I have read about not to reverse on the blind side what does this mean. is it when you are looking for your pitch you find it but it is on the passenger side of the car this will make reversing harder? are you better off with the pitch you are after on the drivers side would this make it easier? also where do you position the caravan when you are starting the manoeuvre say there is a post with the number of the pitch on. would you put the wheels inline with the post or the rear of the caravan.
sorry if this is a little confusing

cheers
steve

On the blind side means with the caravan bent out to the drivers side you can't see the passenger side of it. So aim to reverse in with the caravan bending towards the side with the post. Then you can steer it easily.

The post is usually between pitches and if you're the only one there you will need to work out which side you need to be but it is usually on the drivers side.

You need to work out where you want the van on the pitch. In the middle with awning one side and car the other etc.

Blind side if your left side. Its not really blind when in a car though. That term is more related to an HGV that loses all visibility on that side when the cab unit is close to 90 degrees to the trailer.

Buy a motormover and save the hassle and your clutch. My previous car had a high clutch pedal when i bought it. I thought must get a new one soon.
But because i no longer had to manouvre the caravan with the car i had neglible clutch wear. It was still going fine 4 years later.
No issues towing the caravan. No slipping etc.

Positioning the caravan on the pitch will depend on the site rules and the actual pitch. Some park on a hard patch that maybe gravel or a slab. With grass to the side.
If thats the case you want the tyres right on the edge of the slab so you can get the awning pegs slightly under the van.
Other sites will have a marker where they want the towhitch or jockey wheel to be positioned.

As pointed out 'blind side don't really apply to cars & if you want to end up with caravan along left hand edge of pitch as you face it from road you would be better arriving with pitch on lefthand side particularly if space is tight. As you manoeuvre you need your helper to direct you from where you can see them at all times.

Swing into pitch & then out again so you end up with rear of 'van pointing into pitch. With pitch on left you need to steer righthand down to kick rear of 'van round, keep steering right & take straight off again repeatedly to allow 'van to turn at right angle into pitch without jacknifing car too much. Try to avoid slipping clutch too much or you will smell it gently cooking.

The above is for narrow road between pitches, obviously if there is plenty of space in front of pitch just drive straight out at right angle to pitch & straight back.

Or fit a motor mover.

I recommend that you go on the caravan club or coming club towing course. I went on the cc one and it was very helpful. It is easier to reverse the van so that you are pushing it on to the pitch to your right as you are sat in the driving seat. In this way you can keep an eye on the whole caravan side in particular its wheel.

My advice would be to find a nice quiet area such as an industrial estate on a Sunday, and take your caravan on there for a practise reversing session with a banksman with you to help. The main thing to remember is 1" on the steerring wheel is around 1'on the back of the van,and if you need to turn the steering wheel slowly and smoothly. If you can see the right side of the van through you right mirror ,you need to turn the wheel to the right to straighten it,opposite for the left side.To start the van turning you need to turn the steering wheel the opposite way to the directon you want the van to start going initially.REMEMBER gently does it.

Have a go on the caravan reversing game on here to get the jist of how thing work.

Another vote for the CC course. It taught me the basics, I've practised like mad and I can do it OK now. A mover may save your clutch but it won't help you manoeuvre on a road or in a car park. I'd much rather use the car.

And I'm a girly.

Not a full course, but "taster" sessions may be available at the Manchester (or NEC) Show.

I think the cc course was £120 for a day and a half. It also covers all the stuff about laws and safe loading etc. the camping club is a bit cheaper as it's one day only. You don't have to be member. If you do the course you do get a bit of discount on their respective insurance. If you have the basics already and feel confident it might not be worth the money.   I did it before I got the van to gain confidence.

yeah I feel fairly confident just feel like a few tips off the pros would have been good but 120 seems a little steap when I can d it but may take a few attempts (I don't care what people think they can laugh at me until I get out of the car) lol I will get there I suppose

Get on an Industrial estate. Put one hand on the top of the steering wheel and reverse. Simply follow the tail of the van with your hand, gently. You'll soon master the going back in a straight line. If you can't see the rear of the van, use your mirrors. If you have them set so you can see part of the rear of the van, reverse, still with hand at top of wheel. If the rear of the van fills more of the mirror, turn the top of the wheel to the mirror. If it gets less shown in mirror, turn in opposite direction, once again, GENTLY does it.

Hope this helps.
