After we have all had a good old (deservedly) moan about IOW ferry prices, here is an interesting comparison. We have just booked a Brittany ferry crossing to StMalo along   with 17 nights camping, this trip is identical to one we made 2 years ago - price difference - 35p cheaper!

Would be interested on the cost as we are think of doing that. Presumerably from Portsmouth?
We usually go with Condor to Cherbourg but that would save the drive.
Have just looked up Brittany Ferries from Portsmouth to St Malo and in June it is over £500!!!
Condor is £187. Will drive down the Cherbourg Peninsula I think!!

We were thinking of Brittany but when I looked into the long crossings they were hundreds of pounds in school holidays.   Booked Cornwall now. How did you get a cheap crossing?

just booked portsmouth/caen in school hols.

it was worth us joining the Brittany club...so net cost was £500
yes, still more than sticking to cornwall, but i see it as a price for a bit of sun (i hope)

happy to share a code to get you 10% off Brittany...there are a few on here who do the same

we joined caravan club last year for cheap crossings, but we crossed to calais and drove to brittany, it's really not such a big deal driving over there, we crossed with 5 persons and the caravan return for £80 took the kids out 2 days early and were there for 3 weeks.

this year we can't go early, but has only put cost up to £130 with or without caravan club!

Hope I did'nt confuse anyone here, my point was it was a pleasant surprise to find the Brittany / French camp sites have obviously not increased their prices in the 2 years since our last visit.

Here is our breakdown for June this year, Johnks.30

Ferry: Ptsm/ St Malo £516 ( inc. Large 2 berth, ensuite, outside cabin both outbound and inbound) both car and 'van in oversized class.

Campsites: 17 nights (7 of which are 4* super pitch) £338

Total: £854 - this does not include insurance - £135
We booked with the Caravan Club online

We find this overnight ferry suits us very well. It gets into St Malo at 8.30. If we are staying in Brittany we are pitched up at our favourite Chateau de Galinee by 9.30 (unlike the CC, they let you in that early- do'nt arrive after 12.00 or you'll wait until 2.30pm. LUNCHTIME!!!).

Year before last we shot straight off the ferry and over to the Bay of Morbihan (10 nights) - that was easy and an interesting area then back to Galinee (7 nights) which is in excellent striking distance for the 10.30am ferry home. This gets in about 6.30 and we live 15 mins from the ferry port at Portsmouth.

This year we are straight off the ferry and heading off to Royan to another of our old favourites - Logis de Breuil(10 nights), we expect to arrive at about 4pm. Then we'll return to Galinee (7 nights).

We booked this trip on the 31/12/13 and may have got special early booking reduction. Couple of tips - you need to ensure you will sleep if you're planning a long drive after this overnight crossing. My OH would sleep pegged to a clothes line, so no probs! Also as we are no longer young and athletic we go for the the bigger onboard cabin with 2 floor level bunks and window. Although it is a daytime crossing on our return we like the peace of our own space so treat ourselves to a cabin both ways - much cheaper on return.

Thank you so much Jasie, would very much like to take you up on your code sharing offer.

Hope this helps folks! We are well travelled in France and always happy to share info. Only thing I will add is that we had bad experience with that crossing with Condor a few years ago. Owned by Brittany, they take that Condor crossing out at the drop of a hat. Ours was cancelled and there we were sitting at Caen for 7 hours only to be dropped off in Poole at the dead of night by some emergency vessel they found - no food -no comfort. Good job we knew the area.

You really know how to get a good deal! I think I may have decided against it too soon. Just seemed such a massive effort to research all the ferries and the right site. Also the best way to do it re stop overs when you have to travel down to the south coast in the first place.

I wouldn't pay that much for a ferry crossing when I get one for £187 to Cherbourg. Never had a problem with Condor, always on time and although the boat is old, only takes about 5 hours. Used it about 5 times now on a Sunday.
We rarely book a site but look when we have arrived in France. Depends on our mood where we go.
