Can anyone help, according to some web sites there are several caravans we can tow with a mondeo titanium estate tdci 2.0. However when I work out the 85% weight ratio it comes out at 1200kg. The kerb weight is 1575 and the instructions stated take 10% off for the weight of the passengers etc. Do I also need to take off any equipment, chairs etc as well?
Thanks for any help with this

85% is only a recommendation & really just points out its a good idea to tow a caravan which weighs somewhat less than the towcar. So aim for a figure around 85% but don't worry about bits & pieces like chairs. You will be ok with a 1200kg caravan.

I can help with this one i drive a 2011 Mondeo Titanium X hatch, the true kerbweigh of your car is based on car with 90% fuel and 75KG for driver. On a weigh bridge my car comes in at 1630kg add the 75kg for the driver this makes 1705kg, your estate weighs 20kgs more than the hatchback, I tow a 1500kg caravan with mine and it pulls with no problems and is a very stable outfit, the kerbweight you have quoted is the general kerbweight of a 2ltr mondeo dont forget the higher the spec the heavier the car is.
Hope this helps

The 85% is the cars unladen weight. But its just a guideline.
Just remember the heavier the car in relation to the caravan the better.
The closer you get the cars kerbweight the more care you need and a higher risk of the caravan having control if you need to make an emergency stop or avoid something.

Thanks for the advice, we were looking at a 1295 kg caravan, sounds like the car will be able to pull it.

Well mine pulled my 1150kg van up the hills on the A30 in Cornwall with no turbo assistance. A pipe had come off the turbo.
Funny thing was. As long as i used the gears and didnt try to rev it there was no issue. Until 3/4 the way up the citroen or renault ugly mobile in front also towing slowed me down.
I would go a bit lighter if you can. Less stress on the car.

Too true it will, perfectly

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013
