Loulee. Have you considered heading the other way whilst you get used to the outfit in general? If you arent confident - particularly of hills, why not head to the flatter parts of the UK - say Norfolk, till you get used to things? North and West Yorkshire arent for the faint-hearted when it comes to towing caravans!
Just a thought.
Completely understand thus! I towed for my second time York to Whitby. I went over the top via a169 from Pickering to Whitby. Towed a 1300kg van with 1.9 diesel vectra (think its 150bhp). No problems at all. I did not come back that way though as the hill out of sleights is pretty steep (blue boar bank I think it's called). Lack of confidence to tackle it so came back via Scarborough. Towed it after that to norfolk, Lake District, Cornwall and Peak District. Although I think the car will pull it up that hill fine, I think the fear is having to stop part way up and do hill start. I intend to go to flamborough this weekend and I am going to go via garraby hill though. Having said that met quite a few hills on other trips, not least the access road to callow top campsite and the car did that with almost a worn out clutch.

I totally understand about the fear of hillstarts, even as an experianced caravanner, you can get caught out with some outfits and hill combinations as hard as you try. We have a hill local to home where we sometimes have to stop and wait for oncoming traffic before turning right, and with the Civic it was a nightmare, and one of our reasons for changing our towcar to a CRV.

Louise
We always go round the Leeds ring, A64 to Malton - Pickering, and straight up over the top to Whitby.
In fairness, i am actually going to Hinderwell to the west of Whitby at Easter, so wont go the above route this time. Itll be Blubberhouses to the A19, A172 and that way. You can go this way to Whitby as well, but itll be longer from Leeds.
If you mananged to get in at Serenity you are a lucky bunny!

I always use Streetview to find a site entrance, look at the-lay out etc. But, it wont show you the hills! Some sites sound very amenable, but on closer inspection from the skies - are pokey!
