Hi after having our old caravans wall practically fall off we managed to save a little and bought a hobby 520 1991 model. It's an older caravan so we expected some problems but on the whole it's a awesome van. It sat for years so the exterior has faded a fair bit, we are planning on giving it a paint to freshen it up, my problem is ... Exterior has textured panels, sort of bubble type pattern. I'm guessing that there's no way I can rub down before or during painting. Does anyone have any tips or experience with this ? We are on a budget as our son races moto x and it takes every penny earn't lol. Any help would be appreciated

I painted an Eriba with similar bobbled sides & I just gave it a good clean down with methylated spirit as it leaves less residue than white spirit. I did a reasonable job brush painting with coach enamel which you can get from automotive paint suppliers. It helps to get a better finish if you pay a bit more for good quailty paint brushes.

If it has faded it may be worth trying to polish it and see if that brings the colour up a bit. It'll be a lot quicker and cheaper than prepping and painting. The biggest problem will be finding a dry day to do it.

Try and find some Automotive Re-Finishing Panel Cleaner it's available from motor factors or off the web, approx £15/20 for 5 litre.

You can still rub it down. You only need to key (scratch) the outer layer of paint.

Course scotchbrite pads or simialr should be enough. My caravans a similar texture. The dirt can sit in the dimples so i know what its like to clean.

A medium/soft brush is usually required to wash it.

If you dont prepare it properly the paint may not take.

Thanks for swift reply guys :-) we washed and polished it at weekend, took hours but no point doing it n not doing it right lol. Was thinking of using a 4" sponge gloss roller for larger areas ?? And some decent brushes for the rest, doesn't need to be a perfect paint job but don't want brush marks. Got a large lock up to paint it in thankfully seeing as it's now snowing :-) And sprayed a few car wings so not to bad with this kinda thing. I was going to use some washing up liquid & water in spray to get the stripes along side positioned then squeegee out bubbles & excess water .. Much like window tinting unless anyone has an easier way ?? Thanks

Don't spray it till the weather warms up a bit. You'll finish up with "blooming" if the cold gets to it.

I wasn't planning on spraying it, I was going to roller it with gloss rollers. Have been reading up a bit about paint, from what Iv read Rust-oleum combi colour gives decent results, it's flexible, doesn't need primer and comes in a range if colours for decent price. Also looked at coach & boat paint. Any recommendations ?? Also should I be looking for Matt, gloss, textured paint ? Thanks
