Was down at the van today and notice lots of mould spores dotted round the van. I have cleaned it all up and brought the dishes home for a freshen up but want to prevent this from happening again. I have damp traps in the van at 3 locations and everything is dry but obviously ventilation is the issue here. Now don't want to leave any windows open for obvious reasons so how can I stop the mould from returning?

I had 2 damp traps in my caravan back in 2006 (which was kept in storage) as advised by another caravaner but the difference was that he kept his outside his home and heated it up occasionally during winter so he never had this problem. However, I found the damp traps caused even more problems as the damp it attracts then turns to water and then gets released back into the atmosphere causing damp problems. Since then I don't bother with damp traps at all and never had a problem since with mould.

We didn't use damp tramps and last weekend had to clean a fair amount of mould off, who knows if it was related or not. I read that 2tsp of tea tree oil with 2 cups of water shaken vigorously in a sprayer should kill mould. So after cleaning I sprayed every area with this mixture (you leave it on, don't wipe off). The place stank but the smell soon went, time will tell if it works but I was happier spraying that than bleach on the walls etc.

Ours is left on hook-up (not possible for everyone, i know), with the van fire at its lowest setting, for probably 10 hours a night. Just keeps the chills out, and reduces risk of damp. All the cushions etc are left in, and some lockers are left open to allow circulation throughout.
It may sound expensive, but it really doesnt use that much leccy as the van doesnt get cold enough for the thermostat to stay on for too long.
Ive known folk just lock their vans up for 3/4 months, and found a right mess when they come to use them again, with damp fabrics, and the aforementioned mould spots all over. Its then taken a fortnight to sort them out for use.

Lift all the cushions and put the windows on latch so that air can circulate around. If you have got mould you have probably got damp somewhere.
No damp at all, I have checked every nook and cranny there is

Mould needs to be treated properly as mould spores can damage your respiratory system. You can make up a solution and then wash down the affected areas. This should prevent mould from forming however in the meantime, I would get a damp check done on the caravan.
this year I have seen an increase in van interiors with green mold. I put it down to the extreme weather we have had. If the mold is really bad as others have said you may have a damp problem but if its just a light dusting of mold then its probably moisture in the air. A cheap alternative to commercial damp traps is a tray (not metal) of salt.

Was down the van on Saturday, it is just light patches. I have went over every inch of the van with the damp meter and readings are fine. One thing I did notice though is a vent was blocked by a pillow, which I guess my son had done when I asked him to sort out the top bunk lol. I have cleaned all the mould away and will leave it a week before checking it again, but I have confidence it'll be ok

You must remember oor weather is different from the English weather..we get a lot of dry but damp days.
I was bothered by a lot of condensation through the years and couldnie understand why,
Then as an experiment i left the curtains open and voila nae condensation.
My theory is,with the little sun we get during the winter this is enough to heat the van through the windows during the day thus getting rid of the condensation during the night as the air cools.
Sun in the caravan sure brings the temperature up even on a cold day. In winter, it`s low in the sky so it penetrates right through the van warming it up nicely. Try and face the van south . . . . pointing towards England!

I have just been and taken the cover off our caravan,I left the windows in the vent position and put a damp trap at each end of the van.The only places there seems to be any areas of mould are around the skylight in the bathroom, and around the skylight in the living area.everywhere else is damp and mould free.It seems strange that only the plastic parts are affected.
