Please help. I have just purchased a 2005 swift utopia, put down a deposit in December with a very well know and reputable dealer.
Been to look over the van today prior to pick up and it seems one of the window seals has broke since December and water has got into the van causing mold and damp on the wall and behind the seats. We put the damp meter on and are getting readings of 40 plus.
They have been very understanding and have agreed to look at repairs. This is my first ever van and am worried what to do next and exactly what needs to be replaced to eradicate the problem.
They are wiling for me to pull out of the sale but we had a brilliant deal as we bought just before Christmas, but with this problem what would you advise.
I would walk away, to risky. It's not such a good deal starting out with water penetration and damp from any source. I take they never check their caravans when its as advanced as you say..Your money is good anywhere.

It seems that the van has been standing since we put down a deposit. The source of the water is obvious as its from a window bar that has slipped but its allowed water in and has caused damage to the window cill and behind the seat. The damp meter hit 40 plus and high 20s in the surrounding areas so water is in there now.
I'm absolutely gutted as its the first one we've ever bought and had a cracking deal when we bought it as we purposely went out of season to get a better deal.

Look at it as it wasn't meant to be. My advice would be don't dwell on it because if you do you'll talk yourself into accepting the repair.40s is one heck of a reading.
what was it about the utopia that appealed to you? Was it the layout, the price or something else? I'm only asking as there are other swift models similar to the utopia and you may get newer for the same money

But it can be repaired.. on Our 12 month old caravan we had 3 windows leak this was due to the rubber seal and piece work at the factory But I digress these have been repaired and now its as dry as a bone I know because I check every month or so ...
It was the layout snd the price. The trade price on this van was 6.5k and we got it for under 6k with pretty everything we needed included. It was Christmas week and we got a real bargain. We did damp tests then with no readings so we were chuffed.
I'm worried now as we have to start all over again and by the looks of the dealership today it's a very busy time so the dealer has the advantage with prices etc
We've just paid 2k for a seasonal pitch and doesn't look like we will have a van to go on it.

The window is easy to repair I'm worried about the damage the water has done. If we were to take the repair we would want all the walls and cills replacing as they are all damaged.

Not being funny but you have a choice, geoff+emmy did'nt really have a choice as they already owned the van and the dealer offered to repair it..
I know we have a choice but we've been settled on this van for 3 months and it was due to be moved to a seasonal pitch we paid for in 2 weeks. Took us several weeks to find this van am gutted it looks like we have to start all over again.
If it was dry in December and only damp now Surely the wood frame under the window will not have rotted in such a short space of time and it should dry out The wall boards can be replaced
And you are right Vango But something that cost 20 grand+ should not leak..

A repair like that could take a long time to be done, you could find your ideal van again tomorrow.
I know your desperate to use your seasonal pitch, I would be too, but I'd rather have a good dry van to put on it rather than a repaired wet one. At the end of the day the choice is ultimately yours but I know what I'd be doing.
Good luck
