Salt is much like snake oil in my opinion. There again I live right next to the beach so the air is already salty.

Ventilation is key and if you really want to create a dry atmosphere then a dehumidifier.

If you really must leave trays of things to absorb damp air charcoal would be less corrosive.

Table salt is sodium chloride. The stuff for removing moisture from the air is calcium chloride.
And no, I don't bother using it. It's like using your car's aircon with the windows open - waste of time.

we use salt in butter dishes and it seems to work. we change salt whenever we go to the caravan through the winter. (this year we have tried the salt you throw on paths to get rid of the ice) works just as well.
you will be surprised how much moisture you extract from the air.
our think is: we would sooner have the moisture in our cartons than on our furniture.
