I am still awaiting delivery of our new van. In the meantime I have been looking at the user payload available. At first glance the 193kg seems plenty, but then I started on a few extra weights:

Premium Pack: 38kg
Sun Roof: 9kg
Motor mover 33kg
Awning 12kg
Battery 16kg
gas bottle (Calorlight) 10.5kg
ATC 3kg

So..... without any of the usual junk that goes in the van, such as crockery, food, clothes, etc., of the 193kg available, 120kg is taken up with the bare essentials, leaving just 73kg.

It's surprising how quickly the weight mounts up.

isnt the battery and gas bottle included ? also the atc is the sun roof an extra ? again would expect that to be included if it isnt ?
cant the awning go in the car ?

My payload is 354kg
Air con 34kg, Battery 30kg, Spare wheel 14kg, Mover 55kg
Always taken, Gas bottles etc etc, 94kg
Leaves me 127kg for extras
Heavy stuff awning poles, pegs etc goes in the car.

from the swift site
Allowances for essential equipment (e.g. gas cylinders) previously allowed for in the user payload are now contained within the MRO. A provision for a leisure battery which used to be within the essential equipment payload has now been included within the personal effects payload allowance. Although the method of calculation has changed, the overall effect is that the amount of payload available to the customer has remained the same, it is just calculated in a different manner.

I think that some manufacturers will increase the weight allowance if you send them a cheque for about £80. They send you a stickyn label to go over the weight "plate" on the caravan.

Freelander 640 has the same weights as Lunar Lexon 640 of the same year.
Weights in my brochure.
MRO 1246kg
MTPLM 1600 kg
Payload 354 kg

I have the weights of all extras that might go in the caravan and keep to 1550kg in case I miss something.

Note from my caravan brochure. Maybe you have to pay them £80 (earlier quote) for this.
MTPLM, Most models can have the MTPLM increased with minimum disruption. Contact you nearest Lunar dealer for further information. MRO includes manufacturer tolerance to reflect changes in weights of new raw materials. It is anticipated that this figure will never be exceeded in the caravans standard ex-works specification.

So perhaps I could get them to increase it more?
Seriously I have always kept to figures in hand books or brochures.

Never checked the weights in those days but didn't go far. 4.2 Jag. pulled the caravan OK.

Premium pack, ATC and sun roof are classed as extras and are not included in the MRO. battery and gas bottle are included, but what do they allow as the weight for a battery for instance?

Of course the awning can go in the car, however I want to stow it in the caravan.

If you really want to know the payload then get the dealer to weigh the van and then do the calc taking that from the plated total mass.

The point I am making is that any plated MIRO is just a figure, some makers even putting a 5% tolerance on it.
I did this and the actual weight was 82 kgs more than the plated MIRO. Thankfully the axle had extra capacity and we had a quoted 325 kg play load, so the maker replated the van, and we still achieved a tolerable level, though short of the promise.

Very sobering.

How do you do this Bob? Do they have to make any changes to the caravan itself?

When we bought our Avante it was listed as an optional extra, but the dealer was less than helpful when we enquired about an upgrade, and said it was only available on new caravans when they were ordered direct from the factory for a customer, not on stock which was already at the dealership.

At the time we never persued it any further, as our towcar then would have been towing at over 100% with the new plate fitted and possible extra load.
Now we have just upgraded our towcar, we have plenty of margin to allow for a weight upgrade from the 1265kg, to about 1350kg if my memory serves me well, but what do we have to do to get this? Give Elddis a call?

£80 for one small sticky plate does seem a lot of money if no other changes to the caravan are required though.

We had a 2004 Freelander 640L and to our minds it has the best layout we ever have had. Unfortunately due to redundancy we had to sell it in 2010 and after 6 years usage we "lost" £5000. The same model sells for close to £9000 today.

Trigano Air, 2.8metres porch awning, bulky but light, and no poles.
