Hi all , been away this weekend and the rock pegs we try to use to peg our awning down with were rubbish, heads broke off ,bent, twisted , wouldn't hammer in all the way... is there a nack or another way or method of pegging down on hard standing or were we just unlucky to be on very hard standing

I always use this type and I do buy them from my favourite online auction site but shop around for the best price. I use a metal headed lump hammer to whack them in but make sure you hit the head of the peg and not the nylon bit or of course they may well break. I find the ones with the threaded shanks hold better than smooth shanks and if tight to get out just give them a twist and unscrew them slightly before pulling. I have never broken one yet although being a tenter I don't use hardstands.

we use bivvy pegs...they don't tend to bend. Buy the chub ones with the steel going right through......

We have tried all sorts over the last 17 years, Rock pegs are good always put in at an angle if the plastic breaks we have used large washers, but now after years of hammering in pegs we have changed to thread pegs screwed in with an 18v drill and easier to get out just reverse the drill, Towsure stock these in a good holder you can get about 20 in a pack for about £20 so we have 2 packs and use these on the Gazebos and wind breaks if needed

I also keep a mixture of lengths of rock pegs. I try and get the longer one in at the corners etc. and use the shorter ones for the rest of the awning. Good advice (olliethedude) with any pegging, always go in at a 45 degree ish angle.

If the rock pegs were breaking you may have been hitting them too hard or using too heavy a hammer.

Rock pegs should be driven in with multiple light blows, the same principle as masonry nails and hammer drills, and they will break their way through the rock. Hit them too hard and they will either bounce off the rock or break.

A few years back we bought a set of pegs. These have blue caps and use 8mm x 150mm long hex. head bolts. At the time we obtained them from Moor View (Modbury, Devon) whilst staying at that site.
The caps are all still in good condition (never had one break yet). We now have 8mm x 150mm and 200mm hex head bolts. I fit the pegs using a lump hammer, and remove them using a cordless drill with the appropriate hex socket.
For renewing the bolts, I buy these a hundred at a time on line - at a fraction of the cost from places like B&Q.
Use them on grass or hardstanding, and have never felt the need to use anything else.

I bought a small set of these recently (10 Pack) to supplement my normal pegs.....

I have not tried them yet but they look like they should be more than up to the job!
