guys
i have just baught a swift challenger 1998 model is it necessary to register the caravan or not have you got to do it i know people will say its only £15 but is it really needed
If you have already bought & paid for it without a cris check, I would leave well alone, & no, its not a legal requirement. If you check it now & turns up stolen, possibly several owners ago you will lose 'van unless you pay insurance co. for their losses. The older caravans get the less the owners bother to inform cris of ownership change so I would just leave it.

no i haven't paid for it yet just deposit pick it up next Saturday i think i might do a cris check on it tonight does it tell you instantly if there's a problem
ive done a check on it all is good 1 owner from new 1998 -2013 dec wondered why it was so clean this is why a weight off my mind that it aint gunna get took off me now and i can happily enjoy my new van and holidays bit of a releif befor i hand £2800 cash over to the dealer
The main advantage of you registering it with CRIS is should you have the misfortune to have it stolen it would be easier to identify as yours, but as previously stated the older vans get the less desirable they are to steel, here's hoping all goes well and enjoy your new (to you) van.
------------- Never argue with an idiot, they will bring you down to their level then beat you on experience.

From my research it looks like it needs to be registered to take it abroad, but that might just have been the small print for red pennant I was considering - can't remember.
------------- From tents to trailer tents to a tin tent to an air tent to trailer tent and back to tin tent!
Some insurance companies may insist on CRIS registration in your name and also, of course, when you come to sell it, you can prove it belongs to you. Personally I would spend the £15 to know the van was registered to me and was legit.

I agree with Patches Best register and then you can prove its yours
I would certainly register so should something go wrong the Police then have a point of contact.
But don't fall into the trap I have. Wait until the you have paid the remaing balance first.
The Caravan I was buying has fallen through and I registered it with cris after I paid my deposit. So I am now shown as the registered keeper of a Caravan I have never owned ? ?

That makes a mockery of the CRIS registration scheme if you can register a van that you don't own, anybody could register a stolen caravan and sell it!

If you take your van abroad,in some euro countries,it is a legal requirment for for a UK van to be cris registered,I have just bought a van from a dealer who did the cris check as no certificate was provided by the previous owner,I contacted cris,to register it in my name, was informed that they will contact the previous owner and all being well,I should receive the certificate in the near future,as said by others,it will be easier to sell your van if proof of ownership is supplied with it

I only managed to register the van because the previous owner before the dealer had returned the paper work notifying that the caravan had been sold on so there records showed it as without an owner.
I must praise CRIS as having phoned them to explain the sell had been cancelled ( see post help have I been ripped off) they immediately removed my details off the van and refunded my fee which was a nice touch.
CRIS is a company it is NOT a statutory body. And as such there is no legal requirement for it to be registered. I have been in contact with CRIS regarding the registration of my van following many letters from them reminding me to re-register it. I was astounded by the comments by one of the " sales persons " who advised me it was a legal requirement to have it registered especially for European travel and that I risked having it seized in a European country... Absolute twaddle!
As long as you have proof of purchase and you record your chassis number to provide to the police should it ever be stolen ( the chassis number, make and model will be subsequently placed on the stolen trailer database on the police national computer ) you will be ok.
It's just a sales ploy on the part of CRIS...
My personal opinion is that ALL trailers / caravans etc should have a registration document and a record on the PNC....Makes sense really.
I would agree with Moorlander that ideally all caravans should have a proper registration document but the sad fact is they don't and it doesn't look likely to happen in the near future, in which case the CRIS registration is better than nothing...it does enable you to sell and buyers to buy with more confidence.
