Pick up our first van on Friday, fed up with setting up tents and looking enviously at other campers with nice shiny vans, bit nervous about towing but will get the hang of it. Any tips on towing and using a caravan in general for the first time would be appreciated.Have already booked 2 weeks in north Devon, and hoping to spend Easter in bude...

just take it nice and steady first time out is a big learning curve trust me it was for me in oct last year the one thing i learned very quickly is on motorway in inside lane if a wagon overtakes you put the caravan wheel on the white line for hard shoulder nothing pulls you in then doesnt feel like they are going past also if you have an alko hitch make sure the pads are in good nick my first time out they were just bare metal so it was n help to me whatsoever changed for new pads and its like pulling a new van around. also i pump rear tyres up to manufactures specs 48psi on my car for a fully laden car this also seemed to make a difference

good luck and happy caravaning
sure others will be a bit more help

like you me and shmbo, came to caravanning via the tent route, we're on our 2nd tin tent now and we've often wondered how we managed in a tent .

I'd never towed a caravan before we got our 1st one, yes I was a bit nervous the first time I towed it but it didn't take long to get the hang of it.

as long as you pack the car and 'van properly ( where-ever possible ,keeping the heavier items to be carried in the 'van as low down as you can and over the axle), plan ahead and take your time and you'll be fine

we learnt as we went along but with the help of the great folk on ukcs the learning process was a lot quicker.

so welcome to the world of tin tents ,enjoy

no tin tent outings booked as yet ,just another cruise in Sept' booked so far

Just remember to leave extra room when overtaking or turning left or right, although the van follows you,if you keep tight to the gutter,it will ride over the curb, and use the extended mirrors but remove them when not towing, also,if you don't feel confident, have a look at doing a towing course

All of the above, but most of all, just enjoy it, you will learn something new on every outing. Enjoy, you wont regret the move.
