Hi Guys,
Just wanted to tell my story and remind everyone of the old saying 'buyer beware'!
Last September we bought our first caravan for £700. To a very untrained eye it looked great and no obvious signs of damp. The guy selling it seemed genuine and told us there was no damp, everything was working fine and that he had just had the gas etc checked. We fell in love with it and bought it. After storing it over winter I checked on it a couple of months ago and noticed there was some damp at the front. I bought a cover for it and decided to look at it better when the weather was better. Two weeks ago I decided to get it serviced so we could use the caravan for the first time over easter. I called a local mobile caravan servicer and he immediately checked the damp at the front and said it was very bad and therefore not worth doing a service on it. This was very disappointing as we hadn't even used the caravan yet. Determined to get some use out of it I called another caravan guy that does damp repairs to see how much it would cost to fix. He told me it would be around £400-500. We chatted about the safety of the caravan and he said it would be still ok to use it if we decided to live with the damp for a summer or two. As we don't have the money for repairs we agreed that we would live with the damp for now and use the caravan this summer and see how we get on. I asked him of he could do a full service to check everything else was fine and safe. After completing this service it was even more bad news. The chassis and brakes etc were all fine but the gas and electrics were extremely unsafe. There were nails trough wires and pipes and bits fraying etc that he gave it a category one 'do not use'. This terrified me that someone could be so unscrupulous as to sell this. I had my two young children with me at the time as well. I contacted the the guy that sold it to me to make him aware of what he had done, just really to try and make him think twice about doing something like this again but he claimed he was driving and would call back - which he didn't! So now we are left with a dodgy caravan that we haven't been able to use and much disappointment. We don't have any money to buy another one but I am thinking of putting it on ebay for spares and repairs to see if we can recoup anything back. I will be very honest about the van as I hate all this deception with caravan sales. My other idea was to use it without using the gas and electrics instead of having to go back to our tent. Maybe we could just sleep in it and use the camping gear we have for cooking etc outside? It is so sad that people get conned all the time and spend a lot of money on damp and dangerous vans.
I hope my story urges people to take someone that knows what they are doing with you when you go to buy a caravan. From now on I will take the caravan service guy if we are ever in a position to buy again.
Thanks
Sarah

You have come to the right place for advice, someone on here will offer some solutions. I think you will need to give more details about the problems. Is it just one nail through a wire/ pipe? Why has he condemned the electrics and gas? I can't help but there are many experts on here who will, don't give up!
More details though.
John

The service report says -
Gas supply and appliances - 'do not use, category one unsafe to use fractured pipes and leaking joints'
Electrical Systems - 'Screws through wires, unable to test or repair.'
The chassis and running gear section is all fine just advised to get two new tyres.
Sounds pretty dire!!

That is just awful - I feel so sorry for you. Like you, I am pretty disgusted how people can live with their utter dishonesty! Some people must have no conscience.

Someone on here will give you advice - but my worry for you, is that everything that needs fixed is going to cost you. If it turns out to cost more than the van in the first place, I would get it sold for spares. At least you'll get a little money.

From what I've read on here, some people literally strip back the caravan to the bare bones and re-build. And they seem to do it themselves! So, it must be something you can fix, if you or someone in the family is handy that way.

Wishing you all the best with it. xx

So sorry to hear about this, can't help but just wanted to say that there are some perfectly good bargain price caravans to be found. We sold our old but perfectly sound Castleton for £150 a few years ago.

Hello Sarah. Sounds like you have been unlucky, but dont give in, wires and gas pipes can be repaired, its not the end of the world!. Did the service guy offer to repair the wires/pipes?. Take it on the chin and try to get it fixed, you will not regret it.Agreed though the guy who sold it to you is an absolute Toxxxr. Good luck

Same thing happened to me. Chassis was fine, had to have the gas pipes replaced and the electric was live.. All sorted out easily, but cost around £300. The damp is harder to sort out, but not too difficult.

I FEEL ABSOULTY APPAULLED AT THIS.  I had the same experience with a campervan that was sold to me as fit for purpose, which it wasnt.  I had to scrap it.  but the caravan can be fixed with a little time and love.  Jus tmake sure you get plent of help fro mthe boards and don't forget to get it checked before your firt outing.  As for the damp most cravans seem to have some, its to do with the poystyrene lining!!  Ours has 10% damp on th efloor and we jus tpaid £1000 for it,  but hav eput in a de humidifier and are setting about fixing it before our first outing at Easter..  Don stress, get even and fix it, let them see yu havnt bee n put off campong with a caravan - enjoy

Unfortunately this is typical. Some years ago I bought a caravan but it took me months finding a good one. I knew nothing when I started out but certainly knew plenty by the time I found a decent one. I was very fortunate not to get ripped off. More annoying than wasting a lot of time going to see rough caravans was the total dishonesty of the owners. I actually started to think all caravan owners were villains! I am sure there are very many decent caravan owners (all members of UKCS of course) but it certainly made me very wary.

I think most owners know if their caravans have damp...that is probably why many are sold. This man might not have been aware of nails through wires but he would certainly know there was a problem with the gas if it had just been checked.

As stated, wiring and gas pipes can easily be replaced. It may be worth getting a local gas fitter/electrician to have a look rather than a caravan repairer...might be cheaper.

If you can find where the water is getting in you can seal it and prevent further damage. The inside can then be 'ignored' and will gradually dry out, especially if we have a hot summer, although the panelling will always be soft or 'crinkly'.

If the chassis and brakes are good then that is a big plus and most people change the tyres when they buy a second hand van.

If the inside is in good condition you may get a few hundred back for it on ebay if somebody wants new furnishings or is kitting out a self build motorhome etc; and somebody may want a good chassis to build a trailer...or even repair the caravan.

Wish you luck.

I think I will call the service guy back to see what our options are. I would happily just use it as a tine tent for now even but not sure you can tow it without the electrics working for the lights at least?
Thanks for all your help. I wish we were a bit better at DIY and had more time on our hands to see it as a project!

How awful for you. I wouldn't let him get away with it! I would contact CAB for advice. I would at least ask for my money back plus cost of the service. There has to be something in the law that says it has to be "fit for purpose" unless you signed to say "sold as seen". I would also name and shame him. It is going to cost you a fortune, gas, electric, damp, not to mention anything else you might come across.
There are some rotten people in this world and he is one of them!

You don't have to be good at DIY to fix the damp. Do a bit of research via the Fix it club and Wizards site and you'll get a better picture of what you can do yourself. I'm surprised at your quote for damp repair. We were quoted £1500 for repair of our damp and It wasn't very bad. We repaired it ourselves for £123 and had no experience.
You've come to the right place as a lot of people can be very negative about caravan damp. It's not the end of the world and can be sorted by you. The gas and electrics, I would get a professional to look at, worth the price for peace of mind, especially with kids

Yes Bob is pointing you in right direction...Tbf, it sounds like a 'fixerupper' to me. I guess I could have that up, running & usable in about 3 days. The only thing wrong is that it sounds like you paid about £500 too much for it.

I use just such a basic 'shed on wheels' for my trips down to southern France so it does work. First you need to get some PU sealant, Sikaflex512 or similar, clean out all the seams on the front & run beads of sealant along them & into gaps & also around grab handles, if you waterproof the outside, the interior should dry out over summer.

The gas cooker can be sorted with a new run of copper gas pipe & fittings from gas locker to cooker. Forget any other gas appliances like heater. Obviously electric to road lights must work but I don't bother with interior electrics just battery lanterns & I got rid of tap & use sink with normal camping water container & spout.

If chassis has been serviced then thats ok but tyres may be old & perished & should be replaced even if tread is legal or they could fail at motorway speeds.

Any caravan bought for a few £100s is going to be a shed & you need to see it as an ongoing project, any caravan sold at this price should be sold 'as seen' & cannot really be regarded as 'ready for use'. Any seller should make that clear & any buyer should understand that.

Its the 4th yr I'm towing mine down to France this summer & I have worked out it stands me under £800 total, thats for caravan+new tyres, 2 services, new brakes, hitch damper+loads of fiddling about with bits of wood/screws/sealant etc. & it tows like a new caravan.
