hi managed to get a hire car mitsubishi pick up to tow my sisters caravan on friday but garage said its a standard tow bar but the van as a alco hitch so this wouldnt work would it sorry to sound daft but i only towed with a alco towbar

The towball can be changed out, not that expensive. for exampls

It's not the towbar that has to be changed, it's the bolt on tow'BALL'. An Alko towball has a longer neck and greater clearance underneath to accommodate the Alko hitch so if you tow a unit fitted with an Alko stabiliser the coupling is quite likely to become detached as they are not compatible. Also the towball also needs to be dry for the internal friction pads to grip otherise if you grease the towball the friction pads will then be contaminated.
