Just wondered if anyone had any suggestions of keeping wasps away from the awning etc? we were up at Dunbar last year & there was hundreds, my wife hates them, were going upto Haggerston Castle soon & may have the wasp thing again.

Greetings,
Never tried this one but I've been assured it works.
A slice of ham thrown into the long grass a good ten yards away from your van will ensure that they feed on the ham and not on you.

I don't think putting a slice of ham in the the long grass is the right solution and won't be appreciated by the next campers when it has attracted bluebottles and is covered in maggots.
We always set up wasp traps. Use any sort of dish, bottom part of a coke bottle works well. Then fill with a mix of coke, beer, wine etc. They will be attracted to the sweetness and drown in the liquid after getting intoxicated. Put wasp trap in bin when leaving pitch.

...or good old fashioned wasp spray
I wouldn't spray that too liberally inside an awning. I believe it's not the best thing to get into contact with canvas or acrylic.

Malt vinegar, sprinkled liberally around all entrances to the awning. You might smell like a chip shop, but wasps get one sniff of that and turn around and leave.
It's also very good to put on your skin if you get stung.

Blow up a child's balloon and just hang it outside the awning. It looks wasp nest shaped so other wasps tend to not go near it.
The wasp trap above works well. Mixture of cola, teaspoon of jam and squirt of washing up liquid works well. Cola and jam to attract, the washing up liquid destroys the surface tension of the liquid making it harder for them to get out.
The purpose of wasps is to make more wasps and perpetuate the species. A bit like humans, only wasps do it without ruining everything else as well.

They also have a role in pest control and pollination.

I once sprayed a wasp in the house with insect killer. Believe it or not I was quite upset as the thing took ages to die. I wouldnt do it again. Instead I would go for the sweet jar option - i put an unwashed jam jar about outside or similar. Not ideal as I am still killing them and it doesnt please me.
