Hello all

We are seriously looking at used touring caravans and having 3 children 17,13 & 12 we are looking for something that will suit.

Having looked around at a few we think a lightweight 5 birth with the end diner that can be made into a double would suit.

The 17 year old would sleep in an awning or tent if he ever came along which is doubtful, we would be looking to tour UK but also Europe.

So we have a budget of upto £8k and would like to know what we could get for our money.

Would like something less than 10 years old, i would think private as it seems like the dealers take away all the accessories so they have to be purchased again.

Our current tow car has a limit of 1400kg

Thought please anyone

Mak, South Lincs.

Hi Mak and welcome

You may want to check what your car can actually safely tow rather than its technical limit per handbook, which I assume is the 1400kg you refer to?

To avoid overloading with facts etc a rough guide of 85% of your cars kerb weight is often used for novice towers

As your car has quite a low tow limit I would guess it may be quite lightweight so your recommended max weight may be lower

Hi and thanks for the reply

OK well i have many years of towing under my belt with various different large items but usually vehicles on trailers.

Looking at the kerb weight and the 85% rule i dont think any caravan would come under the weight, the car being a astra touring 2.0 SRI CTDI with a kerb weight of 1521kg would give me a MTPLM of 1292kg for the caravan, I dont think i've seen anything other than a 2 birth at this level of MTPLM

Mak,

My apologies for assuming you were a novice!

You would be surprised. Firstly our 6 berth triple fixed bunk 7.2m Adria Altea 542DT is 1300kg MTPLM, and they also do a 542DK which is double bunk which may be more suitable if only two kids usually.
Your £8k may be an issue there as may just be too low for one of those although a 2009 /10 model may creep inside privately if you can find one! Older models were 542UK I believe

Have a search through caravanfinder.co.uk and you can search on there by layout and then find a local dealer who has a wide selection and get out and see plenty in the flesh. You cannot beat sitting in a van and poking round to see if layout could work for you

Long term however you may be better looking at upsizing the car maybe to give you more choice?

The 85% is a guide but especially as the car will be fairly well loaded with 5 adult sized people it would be wise to keep the caravan weight as low as possible to avoid exceeding the gross train weight of the outfit.

Have a look at the Lunar, Bailey and Adria ranges for a starting point. A Bailey Ranger 500/5 from around 2006 has an MTPLM of 1271kg and the 550/6 is 1298kg. Some of the newer Adria models have a similar weight but are probably over the top of the budget.

Would also consider a sprite musketeer TD.

We have the 2012 model but you can pick them up for less than your budget up to around 2010 and 2011 models.

Our laden weight is around 1272kg (from memory)

We really love it and usually have 2 or 3 kids with us and always seems spacious although compact.

Have fun looking

Cherie x
