I used my Thetford fridge on Gas this weekend - the van is new to me and I have only used it on Gas once before and it was ok.
The problem was it was smelling of fumes in the caravan badly . A friend took the top grill of outside and the exhaust ( flue) was smoking and the metal had black soot on it .... any ideas?
DO NOT USE IT.This will be giving off Carbon Monoxide. This needs to be serviced as during period of non use, burners tend to have rust form and also a favourite winter home for spiders which leave a sticky web inside. Both of these cause improper combustion.

Agreed , burner is parlly blocked , original ones are steel and prone to sooting up / corrosion . It's quite common on the thetford ones, they did an upgrade which was stainless steel and less prone to sooting up . I'm guessing the caravan was used mainly for rallies where no electric hook up was available , normally if the caravan is used on gas for the running of the fridge you will commonly see these issues every 18 months or so ? As already stated don't use it until it's been sorted quite a big job takes a hour as fridge needs removing to access burner assembly.
Thank you.... think its prob never been used on gas .. I think the previous owners used it on electric all the time... I will get it repaired - thank you
