Morning folks
Trying to get insurance for my 15year old van, this might seem easy but we had two claims last year, tyre blow out and also a fire which destroyed my van, hence purchasing another second hand one.
any body know where Ican get insurance from and is it worth it with the van being older

You only insure caravan for fire/theft/damage, you are covered for third party risks while towing on your car insurance. If its 15yrs old I suppose its still worth £2-3k, so a bit to lose if it does get wrecked but if, due to previous claims, insurance is difficult/expensive to obtain then your choice if you don't bother. Theres no legal requirement for caravan insurance.

If that's the case then, your car insurance is covering your caravan free of charge. If you don't tell your car insurance any details regarding towing a caravan then I can't see how they can include any insurance cover for the caravan at no extra cost and no details of value etc.

If you read the small print of any comprehensive car policy you will see that you are covered for 3rd party risks while towing a trailer or caravan, ie the outfit is insured as a complete entity for 3rd party only.
Your car is covered comprehensively as well but caravan only for 3rd party so in event of an accident there is no claim for repairs for caravan unless other driver was at fault & you could possibly claim off his insurance?
If you read your caravan policy you may notice it does not cover 3rd party risks while towing because you are covered under car policy. You are obviously covered for accident damage on caravan policy.
Obviously a good idea to inform your car insurer of towbar fitment but whatever you are towing is covered 3rd only under terms of car policy.

....& for the benefit of pedants I will add that in the event of an accident your are still covered by your car ins. for damage to 3rd party persons & property even if caravan or any part of it detaches from car. If caravan detatches from car while being towed then that is an accident & you are covered.
You caravan insurer will not be interested in 3rd party claims in the above circumstances only in claims for damage to caravan.
For example p14 of Saga caravan insurance t&c's..Liability to others..We do not cover the following..any liability which happens while your caravan is being towed..

Try the CC they insure any road legal caravan in the UK.
------------- Bill
For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

our caravan is 22yo, not worth a great deal on it's own but is insured through the CC, don't forget it's not just your van your insuring but the contents too, which in some cases can prove to be as costly as the van itself to replace if the worst do's happen, also our caravan lives in a storage yard when we aren't using it and HAS to be insured as part of the storage agreement.
upto now we haven't had any problems insuring this van or our 1st one because of their age but then again, touch wood, we've never had to make a claim either
------------- no tin tent outings booked as yet ,just another cruise in Sept' booked so far
