New to this caravan lark, but think we should have breakdown cover. We get our caravan next thursday, so need to get something in place. Would be good to know who others use and who is good / bad.
As well is two words!
How does a sage know everything about everything? or does he? or does he just think he does?
Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.
Firstly check the small print make sure you have natiowide recovery to home. Many cheaper policies have a limit of 10 miles. Your existing car policy may already cover you for a towed vehicle. I have used Brittania Rescue part of the LV group for the last 23 years. Always been good value and reliable. Check customer surveys they always score well on response and customer service.
I recently tried to arrange European breakdown cover with the AA as we are getting our first caravan soon and they told me anything over 7 m isn't covered and they can't guarantee our dogs would be allowed in the recovery vehicle ! Rubbish . I'm going to ring C&CC tomorrow !
I have contacted tsb as I have relay, home start and breakdown with my account charges. I have read the small print as well. The caravan can be recovered with the tow vehicle as long as the total train weight is less than 3500kgs. I am covered with what ever vehicle I use. Also as it's a joint account my wife has all the same benefits. (Travel insurance is part of it and mobile insurance).
dont use rac, they left us stranded on moors near whitby, standard cover will only do caravans upto 18ft long.Green flags mayday scheme is good.but you need to join caravan club. But then you get good discount on sites.Pays for itself quickly.
If you're thinking of joining the CC they have an offer of 2 free night vouchers for clubs sites when you buy their mayday breakdown cover (green flag). We were with directline (also green flag) till someone on here mentioned their small print says they cover caravans up to 7m, ours is just over so we changed.
------------- From tents to trailer tents to a tin tent to an air tent to trailer tent and back to tin tent!

most car based recovery/breakdown operators will only recover a trailer or caravan IF IT IS ATTACHED TO THE CAR at the time of breakdown. If your car breaks down & needs to be recovered while your caravan /trailer is on a campsite then you van/ trailer will not be recovered.
if this happens when you are abroad then recovery cost for the van/trailer can be horrendous. Plus if the recovery costs exceed the value of the car then they will not recover either, so check & double check the T's & C's carefully
from one who knows
Only Mayday for me. Last April I re-joined Mayday after a few years absence, as we were going to Scotland. We were involved in an accident (not towing at the time)in the middle of nowhere, right in the north of Scotland and the car was written off.
The recovery agent recovered our car back to his garage, some 50 miles away, then lent us a courtesy car to get back to our caravan which was another 60 miles.
We organised a hire car and decided to return home 2 days later. The recovery agent then towed our caravan all the way to Bristol.
Only Mayday would offer that sort of cover I think.
HI BAILEYMAN SORRY TO HEAR THAT YOUR CAR WAS WRITTEN OFF HOPE EVERY ONE WAS OK.
NICE TO HEAR GREEN FLAG HELPED YOU OUT WE TWO JOINED MAYDAY WITH THE CARAVAN CLUB JUST FOR PEACE OF MIND WE WOULD BE COVERED AND AFTER YOUR POST ITS PUT MY MIND AT REST GREAT SERVICE GREEN FLAG.

Yes they will recover the van if the car breaks down. But probably wont cover the caravan if it requires repairs.
Also will they take your car to one place and the caravan to another and then take it home after your holiday etc?
Adding the extra cover isnt that cheap but it will save a lot of headaches if you do need their service.
went through all this crap last year and cancelled our holiday as i found out to late .
RAC who i had full home recovery with the top one ,will not even come out to a caravan puncture ,AVOID THEM LIKE THE PLAGUE .
the AA is the same
there are various cheap options out there like auto-national rescue etc but i decided to opt for normal car recovery/relay with green flag and this will get you your car and caravan home .yes you can join one of the clubs and get extra cover etc i know but its a unneeded expense imho .all i want is to get car and van and ourselves home .
