I spent a 5 years doing accident/breakdown recoveries on the M1 and spent many hours in the summer scrapping up cars and caravans that have jack knifed due to having to brake sharply when speeding. Yesterday I was travelling down the M5 at 70mph (not towing) and I was passed by a car towing a caravan and I saw numerous others doing at-least much the same speed. Just because your car can tow at that speed I can 100% assure you, you can not stop quickly or safely at that speed you WILL CRASH, you may kill your loved ones in the process and cause the death of others.

It is definitely a minority who won't care until the inevitable happens and will then deny they were speeding. Same with all road users who speed. Sometimes you can be driving within legal limits and still be going dangerously fast, especially on country lanes.

Fact of life unfortunately. Car/caravans are no different. People will break speed limits. cars, Motorbikes, HGV's, vans - you name it. They all do it.

It is wrong but who can say in all honesty that they never break speed limits in any vehicle.

unfortunately its not a small minority. Cars are designed to stop safely from there max speed. Caravan's are designed to stop from a max speed of 100kph for single axles and 110kph for twin axles. That is when in new, in perfect working order, correctly loaded and matched to towing vehicle driven by a trained driver

I work on the Motorways as a patrol officer and unfortunately we see this on a regular basis. It's also surprising how much extras you see crammed into the vans front locker and floor. It seems to be families with kids usually. Whilst in my own car I have had them passing me at 70mph. Sadly these people think it will never happen to them. I always stick to limits but nearly became an incident myself last year due to white van man passing me at 80mph whilst I was passing a truck. The bow wave threw me all over the motorway but luckily I regained control but that was hairy.

A quick search on Google suggests alko chassis are designed and approved up to 140 kph... not that I'm suggesting you try this out you understand😨😨

Seen it myself, and have been overtaken several times on the motorway by larger, heavier outfits when I have been doing the max. limit of 60mph. Seen several tails wagging the dog as well! Some people are just not born with common sense, or think that the rules don't apply to them.

I don't tow above 60mph, although it may creep to 65 without realising, however in france I could tow my unit at 80mph legally if I wanted to, so why is it not considered so dangerous over there?

Maybe the 80/60 mph speed limit difference between French and UK roads has something to do with the fact that in France 8.5 and in the GB 5.1 people are killed every year per 100,000 motor vehicles?

In France road deaths are 66% higher and speed limit is 60% higher. Coincidence?

got to agree with PaulBB, just because your vehicle CAN tow at speeds above the legal towing limit ,doesn't mean you should,
unfortunately too many that do drive at speed, either with or without a caravan , don't really have the skill set or experience to do so.

I still maintain thats its a minority. I drive along the A55 to work and its a popular route with caravanners and most I see do adhere to the towing speed limit. I am not so sure that the same applies to other vehicles except trucks.

I still maintain thats its a minority. I drive along the A55 to work and its a popular route with caravanners and most I see do adhere to the towing speed limit. I am not so sure that the same applies to other vehicles except trucks.

second that, i spend hours tramping the motorways and very rarely see a caravan speed, worst culprits are 4x4's towing car trailers and also using the outer lane, second seem to be cars towing little trailers and also using outer lane. and yes i am white van man (well silver) but i tend to stick to 60mph 65 if in a hurry, when you pay for your own fuel and repairs it makes a difference
