Puriclean is better, as it doesn't corrode hot water cylinders. You can buy it from Halfords, or online.
When you have filled your water barrel and put in the puriclean, connect it up and pump it through to the taps, then leave all for a minimum of two hours (I leave it overnight) then drain and rinse the pipes and barrel with fresh water. It only takes between 6-10 teaspoons, so it's very economical, and very effective.
Sterilisation tablets will only treat the water in the barrel but not the system itself so it's pointless and a waste of money adding tablets to then get contaminated in the water pipes. As the previous posts have said, you need to clean the system first with Puriclean and then add tablets afterwards for that added protection if you want. All the information on water sterilisation can be found in the link.
After the winter break I always puriclean the barrel and pump it to the taps and leave overnight, then flush with pure water, the barrel is the clean bit, the pipes are usually minging, take one off and have a look!
