We are off to Wold farm at Flamborough "soon" and would like to know the best caravan route to take ?

The last time we did an east coast trip was when I borrowed fathers overfinch Range Rover and towed a 4 berth van up Garrowby hill out of Stamford bridge( was like there was no caravan behind us but it didn't like to drive last petrol stations !!)

Our van is currently at friends house( garage) in Keighley West Yorkshire as we have been having new fencing and gardens turfing so needed space, so we will be travelling from there.

Any suggestions please as our sat navs don't have a caravan option. Have tried various app based iphone navigation aids but they all route up Garrowby hill

Thanks in advance

Use Garrowby lots of times to East coast, not a problem, just change gear early and keep the revs up. Watch out for slow moving HGV's and be prepared to crawl up behind them.

I live in Brid and I never drive up Garrowby Hill with my van. Why bother to strain the engine. I have seen Range Rovers at the top having to stop with the bonnet up trying to cool the engine. The last third is a steeper gradient than the rest and if you get a lorry in from you are stuck and almost standstill.

From York take the A1079 signposted to Hull. At Shiptonthorpe roundabout (at Langlands Garden centre) turn left and keep on that road to Brid. At the first set of traffic lights in Brid its straight on and keep going to a roundabout. Straight on and just keep on that road till you hit Flamborough

Enjoy the journey over the wolds

Phil

Hi Moorlander

Coming from Keighley, and contemplating Garrowby hill I assumed that you would have been looking at the York route taking the A64 ring road around to the south of York. If so then where you come off that road at the Brid turn off you have two choices, either Stamford Bridge and Garrowby Hill or the A1079 signposted to Hull.

If you take that A1079, about half a mile after the A64 turn off, on the left hand side is a long layby with a cafe where you can pull in for the loos if required and which is a rather handy rest place en route.

This road takes you past Pocklington and on to Shiptonthorpe where you join the road you mentioned that comes from Howden.

I suppose that if you head North from Keighley on to the A59 to the Harrogate road that may be a way to get to York. Nice run along that road past Menwith hill. When we go that way we don't go through Harrogate but turn off at the first roundabout after the Lord Nelson pub (on your right). its a few miles after that pub. That is signposted Ripon and takes you into Killinghall. At the end of that road turn left towards Ripon. At the next roundabout at Ripley turn right and that takes you to Knaresborough past the Club Stite.

In Knaresborough, at the end of that road, there are traffic lights, and its left then immediately right into Knaresborough Town Centre and straight on to the A59 to York.

If you work on the basis that whatever gear you go up a hill in without the van you need to be at least one gear down with a van you can get stumped on Garrowby Hill if you are behind a lorry. Many a time on that last third of the hill I have had a lorry grind to a halt and had to get into first to get speed up to pass it. There is nothing lower than first so with a van you may just stop then its a hill start at about the 1 in 6/7 part of the hill

Langlands Garden centre at Shiptonthorpe has a car park big enough to get the van in swing it round and park facing forward to come back out. Nice place to stop for a streatch, loos, coffee etc

Hope this helps.

Phil

I am going to avoid the A166 / Stamford bridge and Garrowby hill. No,longer have access to a 5 litre v8 range rover. Was going to go via the m62 and then off at Howden , but will have a look at the shiptonthorpe route.
