Can anyone recommend the easiest route from South Yorkshire. We live in Leeds so we'll be traveling south on the M1. We did a test run on Glissop road then on way back went towards Chesterfield on the Eccleshall Road into Sheffield but that seemed a little hair raising. We have a large single axle outfit towing with a 2.0 litre diesel so flat road are more forgiving to us.
Has anyone taken the challenge to pass on tips...?
We live in Barnsley and go to Castleton CC site all the time. Come off at junction 36 and follow the A61 right down in to Hillsbrough then you turn off on to the A6101 for a while and then onto the A57 all the way to lady bower then turn left at lady bower res down to Bamford then on to Castleton. Hillsbrough can be busy and a bit confusing with the different lanes to get into so a sat nav may be good for this bit but otherwise it's a doddle and the best route from the M1. Hope this helps

I did notice that a lot of the way from hills'bgh was down hill once you'd gone over ladybower....what about on way back with hills ? was it easy enough ? have you ever done it the other way via Eccleshall Road ?

never in this world it is a 1:4 I use the M1 then the Parkway towards Sheffield to come off south onto the Ring Road well before the city centre. Follow this to the Bakewell signs and follow the Bakewell signs to the big oval roundabout (Owler Bar) above Sheffield and then Hathersage and Castleton
Using Eccleshall road is a no go for me - hill starts for at least a mile and a half.
I had never heard of Winnat's pass before then. We didn't go home that way. When we were queueing to go into a cavern at the bottom of the hill a couple of days later you could smell the heated brake pads of the cars. Our old van only weighed 1000kg fully loaded.

Is that the A57 Glossop road that you get onto from Sheffield city centre?
We've never gone via eccleshall road. The only down hill section is through Bamford and we have never had a problem coming back up the hill despite having to sometimes stop and start again to allow traffic down due to cars being parked on our side of the road. I don't think there is a hassle free way of getting to castleton from the m1 due to the roads you need to go on from any direction but we've always got there without a problem
We stayed at this site in February and followed the CC route, leaving the M1 at junction 29 and following the A617 towards Chesterfield, then picking up the A619.
Directions
Please only use these recommended directions for the final approach and not SatNav, due to unsuitable roads for towing. Winnatts Pass is unsuitable for caravans and motorhomes. From East (Chesterfield): turn onto the A619 (signposted Bakewell). In about 9 miles at the roundabout in Baslow turn right at the second exit onto the A623. In about 7 miles turn right onto B6049 (signposted Bradwell, Castleton). At the T-Junction turn left onto the A6187. The site is on the right in 2 miles. From the West: leave A6 (Chapel-en-le-Frith - Buxton) onto the A623 continue past first signpost for Castleton, at Sparrowpit (as it leads to Winnatts Pass), In about 6 miles turn left onto the B6049 (signposted Bradwell, Castleton); then as above from East.

We found the route very easy, a few narrow points near Bradwell, not that bad though. Absolutely loved the area and hope to return later in the year. We stayed at Bamford last year and found the road to that site was causing the van's IDC to keep operating, no problems at all with the road to the CC site.

I live in Sheffield, if I was coming from Leeds, I would leave at junction 36, come down Halifax road along Penistone road until st johns church and turn right( you'll see a pizza hut there too), it would be a little tight going through Hillsborough corner, but it's still quite wide, you could stop off at Towsure to pick up any bits you've missed.
the drive up rivelin isn't bad and the only tight spot after that is the downhill through Bamford but again nothing to be worried about.
the way back the only big hills are back through Bamford and up from ladybower, but they aren't so steep you'd need to worry.
Enjoy Castleton it's a lovely place and the area if beautiful
