Hi
I'm a total newbie to caravans, and looking to buy my first - a cheapie older 'van to see how I get on. Looking at adverts some come with all the extras, and others without as the sellers are wanting ti keep them for their new caravan.
I know this is a bit of a 'how long is a piece of string' question, but what do you think the cost of buying all the 'extras' would be? And are things like gas regulators and leisure batteries generally left with the caravan if not mentioned?
I will no doubt be along with more daft questions, but for now info on this would be very helpful!
Thank you

Our new to us caravan came with with gas bottles, regulators, awning and other bits an pieces but we bought new leisure battery, hitch lock and wheel lock which I think was between £200-£300. We got aquarolls and wastemaster from freecycle.

Extras can be a deal breaker - you'll pay closer to the asking price if they throw in all the bits.

It really depends what comes with it and what you think you need. The list can be endless........

Thanks Homebird
Just to get the essentials sounds like it will significantly add to the cost - had seen a nice looking caravan advertised but it comes with nothing, so will probably be a no-go.

When selling my vans i always left every thing. This was a sales ploy and even though people did not know this, they were reflected in the price of the van.

I would have thought that a battery and gas bottle/s and regulator would be left with the van, water and waste barrels can be had for not a lot of money if you have patience and even awnings can be picked up cheaply enough, you just need to be careful that its all there, fits your van and is undamaged.
The security devices are expensive however, even second hand.
I suppose it depends how much your caravan is worth, whether your insurance requires certain security measures and where you are in the world with regard to possible theft.
Having re-read Homebirds post I suppose that a battery might be required if the one in the van is past it, hadn't thought of that. Don't let that put you off though, I'd use a car battery until I could afford a new one if I had to. A big part of the enjoyment is getting everything sorted to suit yourself and getting bargains off e-bay and gumtree is a sport all by itself.

Don't be put off by a van with nothing, try and negotiate 2-300 quid of the price.
Wheel clamp hitch lock water waste and aqua roll can be bought for 100 or thereabouts if you know where to look. Steps awnings and other bits and bobs also can be sourced easily for 100-150 for everything. I kitted my first van out for £350 in total mostly new but some second hand stuff

Thanks, that's really very useful.
I'm looking at older vans around the £1000 mark, and the one I've seen is around that price but without the extras - but a bit newer, so swings and roundabouts. Not too fussed about an awning just now, so that can wait.
Doesn't need to have huge amounts of security as not an expensive caravan (will have some though).
I guess it will depend on how happy the seller is to negotiate ;)
