We are buying a BMW X5 09 plate and it is going to be fitted with a detachable tow bar. Someone said that we have the old type connection on our caravan and will need something so we can tow our caravan using the detachable tow bar. We have a fleetwood garland 165/5 - Can anyone help us or give us some advice?
I assumed hitch too, and agree with Fife-Bloke that van will be ok on a detachable hitch. However, comment could also relate to the electrical connection, if the Beemer is being fitted with 13 pin electrics.
Hi thanks - yes it is an old hitch on a fleetwood garland 165/5... I'm not sure on the electrics but someone said I needed something in order to tow it with a detachable tow bar?
Above is the type of hitch I have, going on to a detachable tow bar - my partners brother in law is saying we need a stabiliser that wraps round the tow bar to tow it. Can anyone suggest which one to get as the caravan shop we went to didn't have a clue what I was going on about
Maybe he means something like this. But you don't need to have one.
------------- XVI yes?
As well is two words!
How does a sage know everything about everything? or does he? or does he just think he does?
Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.
As Blueexpo97 has stated, there is no need to have any stabiliser fitted to use a detachable towbar.
If the caravan tows nice and steady and you're confident of it's handling, just carry on as you presumably have been.
Hi
You should be able to tow quite well with that hitch i would change to a alko hitch is possible and as for the electrics tell who ever is fitting your tow bar which connection you have and they will fitt a suitable attachment on your vehicle. Hope this helps.

Thank you everyone - Think I will pop to BMW today and make sure they are fitting the right electrics to the car as the tow bar, electrics and fitting is costing 2k.
