How safe is safe? A free standing hob is no different from a caravan hob. If you wanted to use a camping stove inside the caravan its ok, you just have to be careful you don't knock anything flying really, its just common sense. On a nice day you can cook outside anyway. Plenty of caravanners take a separate stove & gas bottle & cook outside if its nice.

Thanks for the reply, michell8. I may be going over the top with the caution and as you say there is always cooking outside or in the awning.
I've been checking electric hobs on the internet but reviews aren't always great so I wanted to get people's views - the opinions of seasoned campers is always my first port of call with things like this
We have a portable electric hob. Works well. Needs to be secure in the van i.e. don't want it sliding off the worktop with a pan of boiling water. Ours is a 2 ring hob and uses a lot of electric if both are in use. It will trip the power on light load sites. 10amp+ it's ok. Below that tends to be one ring only.
I use a suitcase stove in my caravan and have also got an electric hot plate/griddle for when I am on EHU.
Both work well and I have made some lovely meals using these.
Number of years back there were a couple units nick named the students kitchen, which consisted of a mirowave size unit with combined oven and toaster and on top two solid 8" electric rings, the oven door acted as a pull down shelf with handle as the foot or support. I also seem to remember a third company bringing out a similar version only the the two hot plates were instant glow spirals. I think one was made by Creda and one by Electralux or similar name the third had a foreign name but was british built. the outer of all models was grey stove enameled with white spots . I I have seen in a fellow vanners awning a combi oven / rotisserie with fixed toaster and kettle on top. I ment to ask him where he purchased his kitchen marvel but it slipped my mind or was it the plonk ?.
