Getting my first caravan tomorrow is it best to disconnect the gas bottles when traveling or when leaving the caravan for a few weeks till it's used again ?? Sorry but new to caravans
The gas cylinder should always be disconnected whilst in transit and also recommended they are also turned off when in storage. This is due to fire regulations because if the valve is left permanently open in the event of a fire the gas will fuel the flames. The hose and regulator need to be isolated when the cylinders are not in use.

Again I just turn the valve off at the bottles. Remember every time you disconnect the hoses and re-fit you will need to test the joint with leak detector fluid or similar to confirm no leaks. I do this every now and again anyways, obviously with gas valve open but pressurised(not using any appliances).
Some say they never have a problem with the hose left connected but the fire brigade do if they are trying to put out a caravan fire. If they can possibly remove a cylinder before an explosion they will, but any restrictions such as a connected hose adds precious time in avoiding a catastrophe which also puts their own lives in danger. When a gas cylinder explodes it rockets about 40 feet into the air which could mean the death of an innocent person. The regulator only takes a minute to disconnect so please think about the lives of others instead of how much time YOU can save.
By the time they have unlocked the gas bottle locker removed all obstructions from the gas bottle locker and undone the bottle securing straps they would be putting themselves at considerable risk if fire is involved.
The act of cutting the hose would be of little significance.
