Unfortunately for me MrH has given me the task of buying a stabiliser and I know nothing!
Were going to go for a second hand bar style.
Is there anything I should look out for/ avoid?
Do you need brackets for both the car and the caravan?
Thanks in advance
I don't know what you mean by a bar style stabiliser. Have a look in the link below as these are the three main three stabilisers on the market produced bt AL-KO. The ones you would be looking at second hand would be the center one (3004 model) or the right one (1300 model).
If you are looking for the old bulldog type you will need to ensure you have the bracket that bolts behind the towball and the bracket that bolts to the A frame.

That's what they call a leaf spring stabiliser. The towcar will have a corresponding plate bolted on behind the towball whereby the spring stabiliser fits through and locks in. The leaf spring is then tensioned and pivots on the centre disc and locates into a nylon channel on the caravan's 'A' frame.
Leaf spring stabilizer can be picked up for about £25 on ebay but they do need to be fitted carefully as the leaf spring can come out of the guide slipper fitted to the caravan A frame if it is not fitted correctly,& the clutch needs occasional servicing (easy to DIY)
so if you buy S/H google the make & download a users guide
BUT they are no alternative to correctly loading the caravan
