When using comparison websites they ask if the car has been modified, obviously the tow car has a tow bar fitted, is this the information they need to let them know that it is going to be used for towing or do they need to be informed of this separately?

Sometimes a little rain must fall before you reach a rainbow.
The work will wait while you show the child the rainbow, but the rainbow won't wait while you finish the work.
When I insured my car, the insurance company asked if any there were any modifications to the vehicle. That means if any parts have been altered or added from when the car was new. I asked if a towbar was classed as a modification and they said yes because it has been fitted as an extra although there was no increase on the policy but it has to be declared otherwise in the event of a claim your insurance could be void.
People will get into a debate over this but at the end of the day the choice is yours whether you declare the fitment of the towbar or not.
Some insurance co's class it as modification, some don't but it does not increase premium. When using comparison sites don't tick modification but before taking out insurance its best to phone & inform them a towbar is fitted.
I'm sure most drivers don't bother as plenty of cars have towbars that are never used but to cover yourself you might as well tell them.
As per tango's post - a tow bar is a modification.
If declared then the insurers will normally assume that you will be towing, but it should always be checked in the policy small print that this is covered.
Worth noting also that just because you are towing, the towed unit is not normally covered should you be involved in an accident, and your caravan insurance should have adequate cover for traffic accident damage or loss.
When you go on line for insurance when clicking yes to modification, towbar will be listed.I also E-mailed my insurer, it made no difference to premium and it is now shown on my policy.
Mine is always declared as a modification and no increase in premium. Dint want them wriggling out of a claim on a technicality in the event of an accident
