Hi Bulaboo,

I can see your last message on leaking Retreats was last year but have only just today been given your thread of postings on this issue.

May I join in, please???

At this point in time, I have just had a third annual service done which indicates water ingress for the first time. We are devastated though do know there are 4 other Retreats on the same site, all now with moderate or bad water ingress. From conversations with my service man and others, who I think may work for or be connected to NCC, it seems certain to me that most if not all Retreats have this problem. And that Baileys are not rushing to solve the problem or offer redress.

How did you get on ?

Hi Bulaboo,

I am just trying to contact you - I replied to your pst about water ingress in Retreats, in June this year, 2017 but just fancy that you have not looked at this old thread for a while. Not surprising as it does seem a lost cause.

However...it is a current problem for me and 4 others on the same seasonal pitch in North Wales so I am keen to make contact with other Retreat owners who have either got some meaningful response from Baileys or been given the bum's rush by them ( most importantly by their CEO)
If this issue is still live or can be revived, I would be grateful for any help or contacts.

Hi Bales

We are sorry to hear about your problem and know how devastating it makes you feel.

Sorry not replied over the weekend but we were at our caravan and been ill since then.

Last year, on our 3rd service, as you know we had damp but we decided, on the advice of the company that services it, to replace the door at the back of the bed and the doors into the units at the front. They did say it might not solve the issue. This did help but we were upset when we realised it hadn't solved it, when we had our service earlier in September and still a lot of damp at the back and, the washroom and the front! We can't smell any damp and nothing in the area feels damp. We knew from experience that we would get no joy from Bailey's. We have decided to have it done as still under guarantee but of course we have to pay to have it transported to workshop in Swansea which is costing us £500! We feel that we have to get it done in case we ever need to sell it and if we leave it until guarantee runs out might not be able to afford getting it done. We know Bailey won't pay for te transportation although they should do as it's obviously a problem with these vans. It makes you feel that maybe we should all get together to see if there is anything we could do.

Our first Bailey Retreat leaked the first night and our headboard was soaked! We had a brand new van which we had at the end of September 2013 but was the first model of 2014. The company we bought the van off have been no help in the past and Carafit who they recommended going with caused us untold stress with promises of doing the service and jobs but not turning up numerous times! The company we bought it from wanted us to pay for it to go there last year but we refused! The new company who did the service and found the damp are brilliant but unfortunately last year couldn't get our van into their workshop.

Looking forward to hearing from you to see what you decided to do.

I had a new Bailey Unicorn series1 with the alutec body.
It was delivered with a nose weight over the chassis maximum.Rectified only after visit from Trading Standards to dealer .Simply amazing they can send it from the factory like that.

There was a recall for wheel nuts to be changed as there was a danger of the wheels coming off. At least this was dealt with properly and quickly.
.
The van was bought with a nationally advertised fixed price for services. The dealer refused to comply with their contractual obligation and I had to pay a higher charge to release the van from thr service bay.
Finally when damp was found at a service the dealer gave a date 3 months away for the work to be done under warranty. It stood from December to March and they were surprised it had got worse! It had to go to the factory for half of the floor to be replaced. It was out of use for about 9 months
.No one wanted to know but I had paid a deposit by credit card and Capital One made a generous compensation for loss of use.
The lesson is pay a deposit by credit card as they are then equally responsible and don't expect too much from dealers or manufacturers .

Thnks MrG for this. Apart from anything else, it is a disgrace that Baileys and others can avoid their warranty obligations so easily and frequently that you have to rely on your card conditions to step in. I think they know most people will not have the resources to fund litigation. I also thought that "Unfit for purpose" meant something in the consumer world.
I don't have a warranty as I bought a six month old van and the dealer did not tell me to complete the Warranty Transfer form!! But doesn't sound like it would have made any difference.
Just moving house over next 3 days but will return to this forum shortly.
Thanks.

HI Tinysec, thanks for your message on 27th Sept.

It's difficult to know what to say that's useful on this topic. There are now 6 Retreats on my site - 5 of which have water ingress ranging from bad to disastrous.

One, in particular, went back to supplying dealer last winter and had the whole back-end removed and refitted after having a new floor up to the galley area! When it was returned to the site by the dealer at the start of summer season in March this year, it immediately started taking in water. The dealer has now fitted 5 new locker doors all of which have leaked and is now proposing to completely seal the rear locker, which neither he or the owner believe for a minute, will stop the problem.

This dealer said all or part, of the problem, is caused by the structure flexing when towed to and from winter storage. Who were the incompetents who designed these things?? On one occasion this July, the owner videoed the water running in through the locks!

If ever the phrase "Unfit for purpose" meant anything, it is with regard to these caravans. What would happen if a new car leaked like this?

Although this friend and fellow sufferer has had the van from new, so has a warranty, he is not getting the matter resolved and Baileys are now suggesting that, despite it, they can not be expected to help much further. He is beside himself with anger.

Another warranted van on the site goes in for its turn to the same dealer who has failed to remedy the other van and who said, basically, he cant fix it!!

My service guy has intimated that there are many others with the same problem. 99% of Retreat leaks are through the rear locker door.

I would like to hear from anyone in this Forum, who has had help or advice from anyone including Trading Standards and I would also like to see if Watchdog or Fake Britain etc, would take up the cause, so anyone reading this, please get in touch.

I have no doubt that manufacturers and dealers are supremely confident that, if there is a problem that is not easily and cheaply remedied, they can drag their feet and wear down the customers' will to pursue them. We need a class action or similar to get any kind of meaningful reparation.

Hope to hear from you and others.
Nil desperandum !!

Bales

As you will see from my previous post on this thread, I had several issues including serious damp.
Trading Standards helped on excess delivered nose weight but later referred me to cab as they no longer had the facility to deal with them. They tried but never got to grips with the problem.
A member on here used the small claims court and won but I think ithe compensation only covered his legal costs.
I tried the Caravan Club whose response was clearly inhibited by the risk to advertising revenue.

I think the National Caravan Council is funded by the manufacturers!

I resorted to the credit card co involved as I paid the deposit by credit card which gives cover under section 75 of a finance act and makes the cc co equally responsible. This was long winded but I was awarded for loss of use for the 9 months it was off the road.
If the cc co refuse you can then appeal to the Financial Ombudsman and this Avenue is free .
I like the Caravan Club and much of what it does except it will not do anything to upset dealers or manufacturers who take precedence over members in my opinion based on over 30 years of membership.

I find it interesting that Club members have just been asked to vote for Club President and Vice President .While it would be wrong to say the candidates are not worthy the two main nominees for these positions were educated at Eaton or Harrow.
When I complained about ne w caravan reviews the clubt told met that they only tested Caravans chosen by manufacturers. I can’t recall a bad review !
I also asked Which to look at this but they said they did not have the resources to test Caravans.
I can only think it needs a separate pressure group to either persuade the CClub to support members or embarrass manufacturers.
