Greetings,

Just been talking to a friend who bought a caravan a couple of years ago, and , when it went for it's first service with it's new owner, the dreaded damp (or so it seemed) was found.
My friend was asked to monitor the situation as the readings, although over 20%, could not justify having to tackle the apparent non existent problem, apart from the high readings.
My mate duly bought tubes of sealant for this year for the mobile engineer to tackle the damp and guess what, the 'damp' has disappeared.
I had advised him to get the 'van out of storage a week before the service and sit it on his drive with windows open. This was still in the Spring just after the awful winter we have just had but, try as he might, the serviceman couldn't find the wet stuff.

That got me thinking about our own situation. We have just put our caravan into part exchange for a motorhome.
One of the items which we transferred on the 1st February was a Scrabble board complete with a wooden turntable. The turntable is in fact just two pieces of square section varnished wood with a half joint in the centre.
We played Scrabble that first night and we found it extremely difficult to get the two pieces of wood together. The wood must have been swollen with damp.
Cut to last weekend and when away, we played Scrabble again. This time the wooden turntable slotted together with ease. The wood had obviously dried out.
Now I know for certain that our 'old' caravan didn't have a damp issue but the circs. of closing up a caravan for the winter creates a 'damp' problem that I believe does not really exist.

The suggestion I have to make is simple. If you have to have your 'van serviced in the early part of the year, or God forbid you are taking it a dealer for part exing, give it an airing before you let someone loose with a damp meter.

Unless you are using a very expensive damp meter, then the readings you get can only ever be taken as a basis to judge future readings against.

I had "readings(???)" of 28% on the back panel of my old van.
2 Penny Vents inserted top and bottom of the rear wardrobe and 3 months later got a zero reading from the same area and that was over a winter period.
