After being side swiped by a lorry coursing considerable
panel damaged to our caravan, I put in a claim on my insurance. I got 2 estimates from Bailey approved dealers each said I would need new panels.
When the insurance assessor came round he wants to the send the caravan to a panel company to have the panels filled. I am not happy about this. as anyone had this type of work done.
PS I believe the assessor is very friendly with this company.
It depends on the value of the caravan. If the cost of new panels plus labour charges outweigh the value of the caravan the insurance will look for an alternative repair tio avoid writing it off. However, they should have confirmed this in writing as to the reason why they are not conducting repairs for a replacement panel.
Is your caravan insured by E&L by any chance?

We suffered some damage to the front of our caravan at easter (largish crack)...won't go into how, I'm still mortified...but I just got one quote from Venture, who said it needed a new front panel, sent that and a couple of photos to our insurer and they promptly sent me a cheque for the cost of the repair less the excess...I was totally amazed to be honest, the claim was for about £2000...very pleasantly surprised, so a thumbs up for Safeguard for me.
We did ask Venture about getting it filled and they said it could be done, but it would show in a couple of years time.

Yes my insurance is with E at L have you had any experience with this company.
The cost of new panels is 4000 lower than the value of my caravan'
It's amazing just how many caravan insurance companies there are and yet I hit the nail on the head immediately asking if it was E&L. The reason why I suspected it was E&L is because there have been several threads on here with people asking about the best caravan insurance and E&L as far as I'm aware haven't received any good reports whatsoever on this forum with a few saying how much hassle they had regarding their claim and the length of time involved before paying out. However, I suppose you chose E&L because they were a lot cheaper than other quotes but the cheapest isn't always the best as the best are always the ones that you get excellent feedback from customers and this is where this forum has it's merits to say the least. The ones that seem to come up trumps regarding quick claim settlements are the Camping & Caravanning 'Club Care' insurance and 'Caravan Guard' who I have been insured with for the last two years mainly because of the positive comments and excellent customer service mentioned on here. Their quote was not only competitive but will also reward you with a further discount if you mention that you seen their advert on UK Campsite.
The best advice always comes from the people with first hand experience so when your caravan insurance is due for renewal then I suggest that you ask first on this forum and then make your own decision but I would certainly avoid insuring with E&L in the future due to their poor reputation from customers who have previously insured with them.
your caravan must have smooth sides without embossed ribs so it can be filled and painted.
A friend of mine had panel damage and had it filled and they painted the whole panel and you can not tell that its been done.
consider the options, the side of your van is probably made up of 2 panels, removing these panels will involve the removal of all the fixed furniture on that side of the van so in effect the whole side of your van may have to be removed and reassembled with the new panels.
if your van has smooth panels the insurance company who ever it is, will go for the filled and painted option,a lot cheaper for them.
If you want to go for new panels talk to the dealers again about their panel estimate and maybe they could add to their estimate a good reason for not filling the damage, one thing that comes to mind is the stress that has been put on the panel joints, that can not be repaired with filler
