Hi!
I need a spot of advice on towing mirrors. I live in Northern Ireland and tow with a Land Rover Defender. I have replaced the original wing mirrors with the larger genuine part mirrors and tow quite happily with these. We are heading to the mainland at the end of the month and wondered if anyone has had any problems regarding NOT fitting extension mirrors. To be honest I would find it hard finding extensions that would fit anyway.
I'd be glad of any feedback on this subject before I get hauled in by the boys in blue for a traffic offence.
Many thanks and happy holiday-ing!
The law does not actually state you need towing mirrors, it just requires driver to be able to see a certain distance behind caravan. Usually this cannot be achieved without towing mirrors if caravan body is wider than tow car body.
So easy 'rule of thumb', if caravan is wider than towcar body, then you need towing mirrors.
If you do need to buy towing mirrors, most reckon Milenco's to be the best.

Do you have a good view to the rear with the setup that you have? If the view is good enough you will not need mirror extensions.
Some Sherpa vans use the same mirrors as a Defender and some of them have longer arms. They will simply be a direct swap.

Hi Mattlad!
Yup! I have a good view of my tail end and the longer arms you mention are the mirrors I have fitted so I must be ok then. I may just measure across my Landy (Patrick) from outside mirror edge to edge to see exactly what the width is compared to the van.
Many thanks.

You might find that the LR long arm mirrors on a standard body width Defender, when solo are themselves sticking out further than we here are allowed!
I looked into this when we ran various Defenders through the nineties and if I recall correctly, they came out more than the then allowed 200mm from the body. They were sold for the Defenders with the wide rear body.
I used to tow occasionally with my old S3 which had Defender door mirrors, as extension mirrors would not fit, I just changed the angle of the arms and was able to see perfectly well. never got stopped by the law!

I have standard 10 pin door mirrors and also hitch up to a Bailey, no problem with the law enforcer. I have good vision on both sides. The common fault over here will be vans and other 4x4s knocking your mirrors. Mine should fold in after a knock (fingers crossed). I expect yours are fixed.
