Hiya,
Another newbie to caravaning. I have an Abbey Iona Vogue 2000 and am confused with the electric "changeover switch". If I read the manual right, it goes in Caravan when connected to mains and it will charge if the charger switch is on.   Central position with charger it supplies the van - and although charger switch is on it cant charge cos its not connected to mains? Car position when hooked to car with charger switch on charger? Am I right?    So when I am not using van for a couple of weeks, I put charger switch on no charge and what position do I leave the changeover switch on... I have reread the book several times and have now got myself throughly confused!

When you say electric change over switch, are you referring to the 12 volt 'car/van' distribution change over panel similar to the switch shown on the left in the link below?

12 volt Change Over Switch

If so then the central position is neutral so any 12 volt electrical current is isolated and this is evident because no power is shown on the battery condition gauge and will read zero. It should be switched to 'car' when towing as this will provide a current to charge the caravan's leisure battery and also provide 12 volt power to the fridge. A reading will also be evident on the battery condition gauge. Before you unplug the power from the car you move the switch to the central position to isolate the current (no power shown on the gauge) to avoid blowing a fuse then when the plug is detached from the car you then switch it to 'van' which the power then comes from the caravan's leisure battery which will show a reading on the battery condition gauge. The gauge gives you a guide as to how much charge is in the battery so no indication on the gauge means there is no power.
Regarding the 240 volt mains electric supply there will be a box with a series of trip switches and all these should be switched on but there may also be another rocker switch somewhere in the location of these trip switches that should also be switched 'on' which will illuminate when the power is activated and this switch needs to be in the 'on' position to provide power to the caravan's onboard charger.
That's how it works on my caravan anyway which is a 1999 model so I would imagine the operation be very much identical.

Thank you, it is the same and it makes sense now. So basically, when van not in use leave it in the central position. lol and I have printed your answer and will adhere to it when I connect to the mains or car. I really appreciate your help. :-)

I have a caravan which has a similar switch to the one in the photograph. I'd like to ask if when running the fridge on mains (240v), which position this rocker switch should be. Is it in the middle?

I put mine on car as I have the charger running to make sure my battery is charging so my motor mover works :-)
