Does anyone know whether I can get breakdown cover for my caravan only?

My Mercedes-Benz comes with complementary Mobilo breakdown cover, but that wouldn't extend to a fault in the 'van. Also, should they need to recover the car and passengers, they would take the 'van only as far as a secure compound.

Can't seem to find anything on t'interweb.

I'm pretty sure that the only way you'll get cover for both your car and caravan is with either the caravan club or the camping and caravanning club, both do an inclusive package that will recover your car back to the campsite if it breaks down and then take both car and caravan home or take the car to a local garage, most independent breakdown companies will recover your car and caravan together but only if the car breaks down whilst towing the caravan, if you break down away from the caravan then they will not recover your caravan, plus if you are covered by either of the two clubs your caravan will be covered for breakdowns also. Hope this helps.

gasman01 is absolutely right as I tried to get independent breakdown cover which is impossible. They will cover the car or car and caravan together but no company that I know of will provide breakdown cover just on the caravan alone.

I have researched this at length and finally joined the caravan club and took out Mayday cover £68 if I remember correctly covers caravan for a breakdown on site as well. Cost of recovering caravan independently would be far more than this so well worth it to us.

Green Flag 'Mayday' has three levels of breakdown cover which £68 is for 'Roadside and Recovery' only. Their extensive 'Premium UK' cover which includes much more is £97.

Has anyone had to use Mayday? If so is it as good as they say?

hi -sorry if I mislead anyone about the price as Tango55 states the price I quoted was for roadside and recovery only but this is enough for us. caravan in storage more than a mile away from home so didn't need homestart or the extra benefit including chauffeur cover as we both drive. I think what you get for £68 dual recovery and cover for caravan breakdown when detached is good value for money especially if on a budget. like most things you get what you pay for. Individuals choose what is important to them. We have AA cover with our bank account but didn't trust that it would recover the caravan when push came to shove and didn't want to find out the hardway and be stranded so worth the extra money to take out the proper cover with people that understand caravanning. Hope we never have to use it.

I've checked out both clubs and find that the C&CC caravan breakdown cover is far more expensive than that of the Caravan Club.

Seems a no-brainer unless I've missed something. Still amazed no-one else does it though.

The C&CC RAC 'Arrival' breakdown is more expensive because it covers more than just attending a breakdown with the caravan in tow. It also covers you if your caravan is detached at the time of a vehicle breakdown. If you read the terms and conditions carefully it states that if your caravan is pitched on a campsite and you leave the campsite in your car, if the car cannot be repaired they will recover both car and caravan providing that the car is within a 75 miles radius. As far as I'm aware there isn't any other breakdown company that offers this sort of level but useful if the unfortunate ever happens. However, it did happen to us last year unfortunately when we were staying on a campsite in Wareham and my car broke down on the way to Poole. Our car couldn't be repaired by the local Volvo dealer so the RAC transported both my car and caravan back home which was a distance of 185 miles which in my view was well worth the extra cost. We still continue today with the RAC 'Arrival' because it's peace of mind especially when you have become a victim of a car breakdown in such circumstances we encountered.
