I'm wondering what is the best place to put the a bubble level on a caravan.

I though to put it on the floor but it seems different places on the floor give different readings.

on the draw bar near the jockey wheel there seems to be a little patch painted in the shape of a bubble level:

Is this the best place to put it, tbh I never thought to ask the person I bought it from.

I do plan to buy a new bubble level as that one the lines have rubbed off.

Have you checked the level itself to see if its close to being correct?

I picked up 3 of those in the shop and they all read differently on the shelf next to each other.

I found the same in the van. The countertop, Frontcupboard and small table were all slightly different.

I now go by the water in the sink. Seems thats more important than anything else. Put about 1/2 litre of water in the sink and level it by that.

Water drains and the fridge works well so cant be far off.

I didn't use the level to check because it's very old.

I used my spirit level that I use for carpentry.

For across axle we have for years simply placed a spirit level with a vertical vial, ours is a Stabila 250mm, against the caravan's outside wall.

For forward aft checking we place it on the rail for the awning skirt, or on side hatch depending where we are standing.

Far better buy a quality level such as Stabila

When I had a small caravan I used to put a spirit level on top of the fridge just inside the door because I was always told if the fridge wasn't level it wouldn't work. By doing that the rest of the caravan always seemed level.

Another place could be the cooker as you want water in pans to be level, or, as mentioned, the sink.

It is the inside of the caravan that needs to be level so that is the best place to put the spirit level in my opinion.

If the outside of my van ever got out of square with the inside, then the best place for that twisted van IMO is a scrap yard.

I have fixed a level on the tow bar. Easy to see as we manouver the caravan into place.

-------------
We camped for years. In 2019 we bought an Elddis Avante 454. We like it as it is short (6.9m) and fits in our driveway and has a fixed bed.
We had 127 nights away in the caravan in 2023.

Our van came with one fitted to the centre of the front winnow sill. You can see it through the front window as you adjust the jockey wheel. I've never check it's accuracy but when I levelled the van using this the water goes straight down the plug hole so can"t be far off.

This is an old van, no sill on the front window.

There is also no work surface to speak of only a couple of bits that fold out.

As I say do the pan thing to get the van level then attach your new one on the front and get it level by shimming it if necessary.

there is an alloy strip that runs right across the front of the van above the gas locker and another that runs right down each side.

Can I assume that these two strips would be sufficient to put a spirit level on to get the van level for side to side and front to back respectively.

Once I can be assured the van is truly level i can then as you say fit a level to it and shim it true

A cheap level will never be very accurate.
Get a good level. I place mine on the cooker top.
OR
use a marble. If it rolls, it's not level.
