I am finally in a position to buy a camper after many years away from it. we would like a coachbuilt for the facilities but our only doubt is that the size would make it impractical to park in order to visit places of interest or towns.
We love the Swift Kontiki 650(2005ish)but at 22 Ft long do other users find this type and size limiting in their choice of destination? we don't really want to be 'site bound' because of the vehicle size.

I am sure we will have many other stupid questions as we look and decide so please bear with us. Just realised I posted this on the caravan forum..DUH.

the smaller the van the more places you can go with it..

you pick your priorities.. i find towns a problem for stopping in and like old fashioned touring so have a small van.. but i dont think you can have it both ways..

Generally the larger motorhomes are difficult to park in towns, etc. A lot of people leave them pitched on the site and use the buses for transport. Or tow a small car behind them... always thought you might as well have a car and caravan in that case!

if you do it properly the motorhome has a garage for its small car..

the americans have things they call "Toy Haulers".. :)

i googled the term out of curiosity..

my dream would be to spend a few years touring the world and take my home and toys with me..

Thanks to all. I guess like everything in life it is about compromise. Loved the caravanning in reverse comment which made me giggle. As for the mobile garage..well I got the car but don't think the RV would fit in my road let alone the drive- and the bank manager would have a hissy fit!

Maybe you do not actually need a motorhome/camper but a caravan instead. We faced this dilemma when we started and again when we changed our caravan.

We came to the conclusion that a camper/motor home is ideal for those people that travel. i.e. stop for a day or 2 then move on. We on the other hand go somewhere for a week or more, have a holiday there then come home. A caravan is more appropriate for that purpose in my view.

If you are a traveller and want a camper then the smaller you go you will find "in town" easier but their is a cost in comfort on site.

The camper also carries the road tax/insurance,mot, service & depreciation costs much greater than a caravan.

You make some good points. Although I do intend to tour, the reality is that I will only get one summer holiday to do this and then at best a few long bank holiday weekends. The rest of the time will be 2 night weekend breaks which probably won't justify a large van.

So glad I came across this site as the advice is building into a picture that may save an expensive mistake.

take a look at eriba tourers if you really want a small caravan and really do want to use it for touring..

they are not cheap but they are built for touring as opposed to lugging to the nearest easy to get at camping site and leaving there all season or lugging back to the storage site when the break is over..

we really are talking two different animals you have to decide which kind of animal would best suit your needs..

We used to A-frame our Morris Tourer behind our campervan and use that for touring about, but a-framing on Scottish single track roads was hairy to say the least. Then again the sites we found were just sublime.
