Hi, just wondering what ways other caravaners get to Whitby from the Doncaster area, after a quick look on the map there are 2 options I think are best which are around York on the A64 towards Pickering and then join the A169 right over the hills to Whitby or up the A1, A19 then A172 towards Guisborough and finally down the A171 but again there looks like there a fairly big hill along the A171.
Does anyone have an experience of how bad some of these hills are for towing

Hi,we go to whitby a lot and A64 is best and over the york moors. It takes us about 3 hours from mansfield. We did look at other ways but it does add quite a lot of miles. The only place you may get held up a bit is on A64 near york.Apart from that its not too bad.
We have caravan stored at Bawtry and went to Robin Hoods Bay (stayed at middlewood farm),joined A1 at Blyth onto A64 to Scarborough then A171, first turn signposted Robin Hoods Bay. This road carrys on to Whitby.
Forgot how long it took, but hassle free.
Having done a similar route this past weekend, I recommend avoiding the A64 northbound around York. We crawled along this road adding around an hour to the journey, sheer volume of traffic just slows everything down. On our midweek return, again southbound was fine, northbound still very busy and slow moving.
Agree with much of the above, we have travelled there from very near you (Rotherham) using A1, A64 etc. the hills you mention are quite steep but perfectly driveable both up and down with the van on and there are some great views. Think the most significant hill, just short of Staithes, is called Blue Bank and its fine. Have a great time!
