Hi Folks, Sorry I looked for a FAQ section for alko hitches but couldn't find one. I'm thinking of moving sideways to a caravan, currently have a camper van, 2 tents and a box trailer. So, the inevitable question is, will my tow ball be compatible with an alko, or will I have to get another and swap them to suit? Regards, Bill :-)

It depends on your towball. If you are talking about an alko hitch with the alko stabiliser then as well as being the right circumference the ball has to have clearance at the base.

Depends on the caravan... Only the newer ones have an Alko hitch. The Alko hitch has some brake pads (?) that grip the tow ball, so needs to be the correct ball. I have recently done the same. I was given the tow ball but had to get a garage to fit it as it needs tightening with a torque wrench. The other problem is the electrics, I had a trailer with a 7-pin socket for the rear lights, my new (well not quite) caravan had a 13-pin socket, so you have to either get a converter socket thing, or get the car's socket changed for a 13-pin one (this cost me £90). I hope this helps...

Sheila

Hi Sheila Jane,

My 2cv and H van only have 1 socket, Ford has 2, looks like I need a complete up grade :-) Cheers for the advice.

Bill.
